video quality questions/issues [Solved by updating AMD drivers]
« on: September 25, 2011, 02:33:02 pm »

i have some newbie video playblack questions:

when playing mkv files with 1080p/24fps content with red october (not HQ), I have noticed that the video quality from MC16 is not as good as cyberlink powerdvd 11.  It is definitely a bit pixelated and I sometimes get these migrating bars moving up the screen.  When I try to switch to Red October HQ, i get the following error:
madVR reports: creating direct3d device failed (8876086c)

I am running: windows 7 64bit, core i5 2500K, AMD Radeon HD 6450, output to onkyo receiver via HDMI

Audio is working perfectly and I can bitstream all formats with no problem.  I'd love to get the video fixed though.  I've been reading through the forum and there are a lot of threads with ways to add/tweak/configure directshow filters, but most of them seem beyond my level of expertise.  And I didn't find anything addressing the direct3d issue in MC16.

I would appreciate any recommendations on how to fix the direct3d issue or improve my video quality through other means.  Thanks!

Try updating the video driver.

Hi JimH, thanks for the quick response.  As far as I know, my drivers are up-to-date.  I checked both in the windows device manager and the AMD catalyst control center. Is there a specific website I should check for newer drivers?

Here is the output from DirectX Diagnostic tool.  It looks OK to me, do you see any issues?

Haha.. actually, I asked because one of the "devices" logmein installs is known to be responsible for the horizontal tearing that you're seeing. I had it myself for a few days before I found out that this device might have been the culprit; the good news is you can disable it with no consequence to logmein. It *might* fix your issue with EVR.

In Device manager:
Display adaptors > disable Logmein Mirror Driver.

;D that's embarrassing.  i did mention my newbie-ness in my first post, right?

Anyway, when I said sure I meant I can install it, I haven't yet.  So I don't think that's doing it.  I was fiddling with the madvr settings yesterday by right-clicking on the video while it's playing, and I possibly made some progress.  By properly setting up the devices as my receiver and TV, then unchecking almost every box, and then checking the three decode boxes (mpeg, VC1, h.264 i think) I was able to get the movie's sound to play over a black screen instead of getting the madVR direct3D error which prevents anything from happening.  Not sure if that makes it easier to help solve the problem?  Would it help if I posted all of my madVR settings?

Is it possible I'm missing some libav or ffmpeg files?  If I choose the intel decoder in the madVR settings, instead of the FFmpeg, I can sometimes get the video to play, but then it looks just like the Red October standard quality.

If you use Red October Std or HQ, MC will download and install everything you need.

Are you using the latest build of MC?  16.0.179 is on the download page.

That's what I was afraid of, hence the long shot.

Just updated to 16.0.179 and still having the same problems.  Any other thoughts?  I recall reading somewhere that madVR acts like a game (which I guess is different than a media player?) . . . could it be some setting on my video card or windows having to do with that?

I've finally resolved the issue, and can now run Red October HQ with no issues.  AMD just released a full set of driver updates.  When I installed them, MC16 was crashing after about 1 minute of use regardless of what I was doing.  After a few crashes, MC16 popped up instructions to uninstall and reinstall, so I did.  With the reinstall of MC16.0.179, everything just worked!
