Trying to Install TV again - Not On Server
« on: October 22, 2011, 02:28:01 pm »

Here we go again. This time I am trying to setup TV on our HTPC, not the Server. So far I have purchased and installed MC17. Have put the HDPVR and your Media Center Remote & Receiver on the HTPC. So this should be a straightforward install of an HDPVR. I also told it the MCE remote in Options/Remote Control.

I have been using the Install directions by Yaobing in my previous thread:

"1. Scan analog channels using HDPVR, choosing either Antenna or Cable (does not matter since the device does not have a tuner anyway).  This will find three input sources on this device.
2. Scan STB channels, using XMLTV/mc2xml, specifying HDPVR as the analog device to receive STB output, and specifying one of the three input sources you choose to make the connection.
3. Setup EPG."

I got through Step 1 and it does recognize the HDPVR.

Before starting Step 2 the Television window shows under 'All Channels': Composite HDPVR, SVideo HDPVR and YRYBY HDPVR. Selecting Composite is the only one that shows anything. It doesn't show any channels yet. Under Program it has TV guide for various times. Guess this is because the EPG is not yet set up.

At step 2 is where I have a problem. In the window 'Scan Channels'/Load set top box channels at the bottom of 'options' it says "Capture device that receives signal from STB:" and there is nothing after that. This happens with either xmltv or mc2xml selected. Then when I go to Scan I get an error message asking for an analog capture device and a channel to which the STB is connected.

Any ideas please? Sure do hope we can get it going this time.

Thanks,
Rod

This is probably where you plugged a video source (your cable box's output to HDPVR's composite).

Quote
"Capture device that receives signal from STB:" and there is nothing after that.

Under that title there should be a combo box that allows you to select a device - "Hauppauge HD PVR Capture Device (analog)" should be listed there and you should select it.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I had the cable box output plugged to HDPVR composite before starting.

There are no combo boxes that you mentioned. It's not there and we need to find out why.

Anything I can do to help: Log file or?

Thanks,

Strange.  I doubt if the log will reveal anything, but send it anyway.

Does the dialog box extend outside of the screen?  It would happen if you use a very low screen resolution.  With screen resolution at 1680x1050, the dialog window is a little more than half of the screen vertically, i.e. around 600 pixels vertically.  This does not seem to be the problem since you were able to click the Next button.

Here's a couple of Screen Shots:

Looks to me like I'm not missing anything on the screen. But mine does look different than yours. There's no combo box.

I have no idea what the Asus devices are. I only have the one tuner and that's the HDPVR.

Jim I'm following the directions from Yaobing in my other thread that I included in my first post here. What would be showing in the log would be step 2 of those instructions. It is supposed to be doing the STB channels and that is what I select in Scan for Channnels.

Before you scan, check the devices first.  I think this is the screen Yaobing meant.

Rod,

It looks like the problem is that we are not handling large font correctly (dialog window size does not increase for large font).

Can you try reducing the font size?

I guess the warning we provide (see attachment) understates the potential problem.

Very strange on fonts. I'm at the smallest which is size 8. Still get the error message. And I've tried various fonts - still get the error.

BTW you are right, the message certainly doesn't cover the potential consequences.

Just did a little more testing of fonts. Had been working with a reduced window size so maximized it. Now I only get the error with some fonts at size 8, but always have the missing combo box.

What is your standard font and size?

Thanks very much for your help.

What's the screen resolution?

There are font sizes in both Windows and MC.

Some real progress now!

My Windows fonts were set to large - changed them to medium and I could see the top combo box and half of the lower box. I was able to select what was needed in both boxes. Did the STB channel scan, loaded the guide and can now see TV on the screen!

Problem is though it doesn't change channels on the STB. I am using your HP transceiver that came with your MCE remote. In the past I only used the transceiver for receiving - not for blasting (did that with the USBUIRT on the server for Sage). I'm trying to change channels on the Standard screen using the mouse on the Guide.  Is there some kind of setup I need to do? Also when I ask for a new channel should I see any light on the transceiver. I don't now.

Thanks again for all your good help Yaobing & Jim. Looks like we are really getting somewhere!

I've been doing some forum searching here, Googling and thinking on the blaster problem. It seems that somewhere there needs to be a setup utility for the blaster. It needs to know what device, Motorola STB in our case, that it's controlling. The proper IR codes have to get entered somewhere. I sure don't see this anywhere in MC17.

Would be very interesting to know how others have set up their JRiver MCE remotes to blast a cable box.

Any input would sure be appreciated.

Thanks,

MC can learn what you want it to send.  It's under the configuration for remotes.

In the MC17 Remote configuration I don't see any numbers in the list of commands. And channel numbers is all the blaster has to send.

Also I thought that the learning of commands is for your receiving, not blasting. I don't see anything in your setup that selects if the learning is for receiving or transmitting.

This should get you started:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Media_Center_Remote_Instructions

Checked the WIKI. I did not have Media Server set to run at Startup as it instructed. Set it to run at startup, rebooted, and still no blasting.

I'm concerned that if I go to setup the commands in MC and have it learn the number commands from the STB remote that it will then not know how to respond properly when I use the MC remote and issue a number command.

Still seems that your setup needs to distinguish between learning receive commands and transmit commands.

Also when the MCE transceiver sends a blast command should I see any kind of light flash on the transceiver?
That would at least indicate that it is trying to blast something. Right now I see no indication when it should be changing channels.

Thanks,
Rod

Go to MC's Tools > Options > Remote control.  There click the "Next >" button.  That will show you a page called "Selection".  Uncheck all (unless you also want to set up other things) except the last item, "Set-top box numbers" and press Next >.   Now you are ready to have MC learn your Set-top box codes.   Keep pressing the requested number button on the remote provided by your cable or satellite company until that button is learned.

I had been at the Options Remote Control, but had either been selecting Devices or Commands before hitting next. (Hitting Next without selecting something doesn't seem intuitive BTW.) So I did as you suggested and found the Learning for set top box commands and only had that selected.. Did this using my Cable Box Remote. Still doesn't change channels though from the guide in Standard View.

Could someone please answer this question: "When the JRiver MCE remote transceiver is issuing IR commands should some kind of light be seen?"  The answer may help us to further troubleshoot.

Thanks very much Yaobing for your help. Any more ideas.

When you hit a button on the remote, the IR transceiver should flash.  It may be difficult to see in bright light.

Did you stick an emitter on the STB?

I thought that the emitter was in the transceiver. Did a separate one come with it? Been so long I can't remember and wonder if I could find it now. Does it look like the one in the WIKI? I've been using the USBUIRT for blasting and thought the MCE was all in one just like the USBUIRT and that you only needed a separate one to control more devices.

Thanks,

No.  It's not the same.  Yes.  One came with it.  Here's a picture of the parts:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Media_Center_Remote

Turn our transceiver around and you'll find two ports on the back.  Each one can receive an emitter.  The other end of the emitter has to be stuck onto the device you want to control, and it must be well located, right over the IR receiver.  Google might be useful.

Hope you're anchored in some beautiful place.

I found it, plugged it in, stuck it on the STB and it WORKS! Works great in fact. Seems quicker at channel changes than Sage.

We have to go out for the evening - really would rather stay home and work with our new setup now.

Thanks Jim & Yaobing for your prompt responses and for your patience with me today. I think we are going to like TV in MC from the very brief look I've had in Theater View. You all have made a lot of progress in a very short period of time.

Thanks, Rod.  Enjoy your night out.

We're very interested in stepping into the void left by Sage, so let us know.

And you can tell your wife we went down the commercial skipping path just for her.  Tell her thanks.  The heavy lifting was by babgvant.

Looks like I jumped the gun on declaring victory last night just before we went out. In my haste to try it out I didn't turn on our audio system assuming that sound would just work. Bad assumption!

TV video, channel changing, etc are fine, but no sound. Very strange. It all works on Audio and other video: DVDs and imported SageTV recordings. And sound from the HDPVR had been working fine with Sage although it was connected to our WHS at the time. We have not previously used it on our HTPC as we are now trying to do.

Here's our audio system: Cable box audio out to HDPVR over optical spdif. HDPVR to HTPC with USB. Asus Essence ST soundcard with H6 daughter-board for 5.1 audio. Essence soundcard analog outs straight to power amps.

Any ideas why sound on TV may not be working?

Jim, thanks for your nice comments last night. Really glad that you made the decision to pursue the void left by Sage. And my wife says she had no idea that she had such power at JRiver to be able to singlehandedly get you to get Comskip going. She thanks you very much, and I of course do to!

Start time-shifting.

I guess you did not install ArcSoft Total Media Extreme.  We are trying to make it work with Microsoft filter when ArcSoft filter is not present, but strangely there is no audio when played in non-time-shifting mode.

Start time-shifting.

I guess you did not install ArcSoft Total Media Extreme.  We are trying to make it work with Microsoft filter when ArcSoft filter is not present, but strangely there is no audio when played in non-time-shifting mode.

Do you suggest I go install TME? Could there be any conflicts with what you presently are doing?

Thanks for the quick help Yaobing.

Installing TME is an option.  I have it on my computer and do not experience problems in MC.  If you ever use Windows merit based DirectShow graph-building mode, then there is an outside chance the ArcSoft filters may be inserted unexpectedly with possible undesirable results.  Some people will not install TME no matter what.  But I think it is fine.  Actually all you need is the ArcSoft MPEG Demultiplexer filter.  You do not really need all the other ArcSoft stuff, especially the TME application.  I have not explored ways of installing only this filter (or the set of filters) and not installing the application, so I can not give you specific pointers on that.

It doesn't really seem that installing TME is an option if I want TV with sound in MC. Looks like I'll have to install it and hope for the best.

Anybody else here using an HDPVR with MC for TV? I'd be interested in hearing how you did it re Arcsoft filter.

Thanks,

Not good news tonight. Went to install TME Ver 2.4 that came with our HDPVR and found that it was already installed. Reinstalled just to be safe. Also installed the drivers that were on the disc not knowing if that was what you needed for audio to work.  No luck, it still doesn't.

Also did a couple of short (5-7 minutes) recordings to see if audio might playback in them.
When I tried to play them back I got the error: "Something went wrong with playback.  Details - Failed to connect video decoder to source/splitter."

So now there are two problems we need help on.

Sure hope you can help. If you got your HDPVR working on Win7 we sure ought to be able to.

Thanks,

May not be the same issue, but I had no audio with a jtv recording from MC17. Adding ffdshow audio decoder (an old manual install of ffdshow IIRC) in 'RO with additional filters' got the audio back. Saved my bacon because it was a show I'd recorded for the other half! It doesn't show in MC16, presumably because of a new jtv format for MC17?

What if you start time-shifting after tuning to a channel (right-click, TV Options > Start time-shifting)?  Do you get sound that way?

Are you getting sound playing a video file?  How about audio file?

Time shifting doesn't give me sound.

As I mentioned in post #28 audio works fine in Video and Audio.

Perhaps the following is of some help to you. If I have TV playing in Standard View, right click, select Direct Show Filters the following is highlighted: MPEG-2 Demultiplexer, Hauppauge HDPVR Encoder & Capture Device & Crossbar, Enhanced Video Renderer, Arcsoft Video Decoder, FFDShow Audio Decoder. Grayed out is: MJTSWriterFilter, JRiver Video Monitor, JRiver Audio Monitor & MJSReaderFilter.

Re Sandy B Ridge's suggestion of installing the FFDShow Audio Decoder it was previously installed on the computer and shows highlighted when playing TV.

Do you want me to try and get a graph during playback posted here?

Thanks again for your help.

Yes, please post the graph info.

I see that the graph can be saved to the clipboard. Is it a .jpg or what? How do I view it? If I can get that far then I should be able to post it here.

Thanks,

A normal installation of ffdshow or any other filter won't affect MC if you use Red October.  RO downloads, installs, and configures its own set of filters.  It's an alternative to Microsoft's DirectShow system.

Rod,

Your graph info shows that MC was using Microsoft MPEG-2 Demultiplexer.  I do not get audio when using this filter unless I start time-shifting.  But in your case you do not even get sound in time-shifting.

It looks like your ArcSoft installation was not correct.  You should try uninstall it and then reinstall it after a reboot.  Before you do that, you may want to try directly checking the filter registration of the ArcSoft filters.   Go to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ArcSoft\Mpeg Engine\" folder (assuming you have a 64-bit Windows OS, otherwise "C:\Program Files\Common Files\ArcSoft\Mpeg Engine\"  folder), and see if ArcDemux.ax is there.  If you can find the file, try re-register it.  Here is how:

1.  Windows Start Button > All Programs > Accessories.  Right click "Command Prompt" and choose "Run as administrator".  Click Yes on User Account Control dialog.

2.  In the command prompt, type

regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ArcSoft\Mpeg Engine\ArcDemux.ax"

and hit Enter.  Read what the pop up window say (it should say something like registration of ... was successful).

If you are able to re-register the ArcSoft demultiplexer filter, you should also try re-registering the ArcSoft Audio Decoder and ArcSoft Audio Decoder HD filters.  Do it the same way as described in my last post, except that the files are ASAudio.ax and ASAudioHD.ax respectively.

Hi Yaobing,

Here's where we are. No sound still on TV.

The ArcDemux.ax was not in the Mpeg Engine Folder. So reinstalled TME. Still wasn't there. Found it in the folder  Arcsoft\Total Media Extreme\Codec. So registered it there. The ASAudio.ax was in the same folder - registered it. The ASAudioHD.ax was not to be found.

Tried TV again on a SD channel. Still video but no sound.

Just emailed you a log file - too big for here.

Thanks very much.
