I have had a problem with HDMI for a while and it's finally solved by updating drivers.

The problem caused MC to lost its audio whenver I turned a Sony receiver on after I'd started playback.  I would get a black flash then no audio.

Matt suggested that I update the Intel drivers.  I found this tool at Intel:

I updated two drivers.  One for Realtek audio, which I'm not using.  The other was a graphics driver.  That must have cured the problem.  Everything works again.

The video driver for sandy bridge systems is also available as an optional update via windows update.
