Feature Request -> 3D SidebySide Mode for Theater View?
« on: November 07, 2011, 05:53:59 am »

Would be nice to integrate a 3D SidebySide Mode for Theater View.
Also for Onscreen Options (Audio,Subtitle and so on.)

Because when watching a 3D SidebySide .mkv Movie Onscreen Options in Fullscreen aren't really readable anymore.
Jumping back to Theater View is the same problem.You have to Jump to 2D and when starting another 3D Movie back to 3D again.That's awful.

And a Theater View in 3D would also be a good looking Feature I think. ;)
With an easy selectable 2D or 3D Option in Theater View,of course.

Advantage of an SidebySide 3D Mode:
No One needs extra Hardware,like a new Receiver for 3D (HDMI 1.4),HDMI V1.4 Cables and so on.
Only a TV wich can handle 3D SydebySide Mode! And I think all of them can handle SidebySide.

Theater View works nicely in 3D using 3D Vision.  3D wall is a trip.

nVidia is the leader in 3D on the computer, and they're pushing frame-packed formats, not side-by-side.  At the same time, side-by-side is more common in downloaded content.

I guess 3d is still the wild west.

Side-by-side is more common because the evil movie pirates have no free encoders/decoders for real 3D content (ie. MVC) :)

It is true that frame packing should be the format of choice for 3D playback. If you know that a movie is side-by-side, a 3D capable renderer could convert that, though!

Being able to read any 3D format in the file and output any 3D format, like Stereoscopic Player (which is also a Directshow player) should be the goal to work towards.

Remember, 3D TV content is mainly Side by side, so it shouldn't be dismissed as a "pirate" format.

I can find Stereoscopic Player's Stereo Transformation filter in the filter list in MC, but is there any way of using it in MC? Tried with a SBS mkv file and setting output format to over/under in the filter configuration, but it still outputs SBS.

I'm not sure doing side-by-side at the application level makes a lot of sense.  It really needs to be at the driver or OS level.

Trying to make Standard View work in side-by-side would be a nightmare.  Windows, as in the technical building blocks of programs, are rectangles.  Splitting a control window into two not-connected rectangles would be a huge change.

I think this is a big part of the reason nVidia wants frame-packed 3d.  2d software works nicely without modification.

My opinion is that a better solution is to have a video renderer that converts from side-by-side to 3d Vision (i.e. frame packed).

I agree the best way to output 3D is via 3D Vision or AMD's equivalent HD3D via HDMI 1.4 to a compatible 3D display. But transforming a side by side file to output through the frame packed format would have to be done in MC, I think? Running theater view in 3D may already be possible through an IZ3D or DDD driver which can make any DX-rendered 3D graphics stereoscopic in a variety of different formats. I'll give it a try when I install the IZ3D driver. Just have to do a backup image and find some time :)

And that's exactly the point why I don't like Frame-Packing.
It forces the user again >:( to buy new hardware,if you want this 3D thing.
I will surely not buy a nvidia Graphic Card or a new AV-Receiver.
My Onkyo (3000$) is 3 Years old and has a great Sound.
I don't want to change only for 3D.But I would have to,if I want 3D and DTS-HD Master Audio at the same time,because you need HDMI 1.4.
And I think there are many People out there with the same opinion.

I have tested 3D the last weeks.

Xbox360 Games 3D-> Only SidebySide.
PS3 Games 3D           ->Also SidebySide.
PC 3D Game - Crysis 2 ->SidebySide   (Looked Great!!!)
Movies all SidebySide  (Are looking great on my 55"/ 3D TV with Ambilight even with Half Resolution.)

And I have tested the IZ3D Driver for other Games but was disapointed.To much to Configure and no good Quality.Crysis 2 is the first and only PC Game which was programmed for 3D.Needs no special Driver and looked really much better in SidebySide 3D Mode than other Games with IZ3D Driver.

So I think SidebySide is really more common and "Hardware Friendly".
And next Year the 4K TV's are coming.Then it's possible to watch 3D in Full HD SidebySide.
The next thing is,I don't want all my Blu-Ray's on my PC.They need to much Space.I've ripped them to mkv and mkv 3D SidebySide.That's all I need and many others too I think.

And I didn't say 3D for Standard View.No one needs this.
3D only makes sense for Theater View and Onscreen Options.
If you decide to intgrate 3D,you will have to include all 3D Modes not only Frame-Packing.
And SidebySide would be the easiest way to start with,I think.

Until now,I don't see any reason to upgrade to MC17.Nothing special about it for me,until now.

Very interesting topic, I didn't knew that Theater View was nvidia 3d vision compatible!!! can anyone explain how to make it work?

My opinion is that a better solution is to have a video renderer that converts from side-by-side to 3d Vision (i.e. frame packed).
Is this possible now?

Matt, please consider implementing 3D SBS only for Theater View!!!  I already have a 3D TV and I think is not Nvidia 3d Vision Compatible!  I'm sure am not the only one with this problem!

I too would like to voice my support for SBS-3D functionality, preferably both with theater view and onscreen options. If that too much to ask for, I would like to see support for onscreen options only – my subtitles and the control bar in the top of the screen looks like a mess when viewing SBS-3D material.

Matt, I urge you to reconsider your stand on this, as side-by-side by far is the most widespread 3D format.

+1 also for SBS Theatre View... all my 3D movies are in that format.
