MC 17.0.26 won't recognize Grace m903
« on: November 09, 2011, 10:25:34 am »

Disclaimer: This is my first post on this forum, so apologies if I've overlooked something obvious.

I purchased this version of MC a week ago and have been trying to configure it properly since. This is the setup I've been using:

http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/Windows-7-Audio-JRiver-Media-Center-14-Configuration

My imported library will play only on the speakers on my Windows 7 (64 bit) laptop. The DAC LEDs stay on 48 (indicating shared mode in use) even though WASAPI is how I configured the player.

Thanks in advance everybody for pointing me in the right direction!

Welcome to Interact.  In the options for Audio, you probably need to choose the sound card you're using.

Thanks Jim.

In Output mode settings>WASAPI settings, I selected the computer soundcard (previously the m903 was selected). None of the four boxes below are checked.

But I'm still getting sound only through the laptop.

Thanks Matt.

I rebooted and went through this configuration but still no change unfortunately. Only getting sound through laptop and DAC is indicating shared mode.

I do have WASAPI configured rather than WASAPI Event. Are WASAPI Exclusive and WASAPI Event one and the same?

Thanks --

"WASAPI - Event Style" is the best choice for USB DACs (unless the DAC manufacturer provides a native ASIO driver, in which case you should use ASIO).

Exclusive is an option inside either WASAPI mode.  Try exclusive toggled both ways.

The m903 should be selected.

Did the device come with a driver?

Did you follow the manufacturer's instructions?

Thanks Jim.

I made that change and selected the m903 but still no change.

The m903 did come with a driver, and the driver is being recognized.

I also have Foobar installed, and it's working fine through the m903 in WASAPI exclusive mode -- the LEDs on the m903 reflect different sample rates depending on the track.

Turn off exclusive mode in foobar.  Turn it on in MC.  You can't have two programs using WASAPI exclusive.

Thanks Jim.

I deleted the WASAPI plug-in for Foobar, and that got MC working again but only for a few hours. Now it's not playing through the m903 or the laptop speakers.

For the time being, I've reinstalled the Foobar WASAPI component and am using Foobar as my music player so I can have music at my desk.

Could this be a problem with the particular beta version I have?

Thanks for your help.

Try not running foobar at all or uninstalling it.  Just get MC going.  WASAPI or WASAPI Exclusive should work.

This is not likely to be a beta problem.  It's probably a configuration problem.

Rebooting might help.

I use the Grace m903 successfully with MC 16, but in order to do so I had to download the ASIO driver from Grace

http://gracedesign.com/products/m903/m903.htm (Grab the USB2 driver)

Then in MC

Player->Playback Options

Output mode: ASIO
Output settings: TUSBAudio ASIO Driver

If that doesn't work in MC17 then I won't be upgrading!  :-\

Hope that helps.

Thanks Mark and Jim --

In an ideal world, I'd like to be able to keep Foobar on my computer and still use MC 17 for the features Foobar doesn't provide -- I just wouldn't have them both open at the same time.

I'd also rather stick with WASAPI.

So far, my experience with this release of MC 17 is that it seems to be unstable compared to Foobar.

I believe you're having problems with WASAPI Exclusive.  That means that only one program can use WASAPI.

ASIO is best, when there's a native driver:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Audio_Output_Modes

So install the ASIO driver, set MC to ASIO, and enjoy.
