Duplicate album names yields incorrect grouping
« on: November 10, 2011, 11:02:34 pm »

Here's the situation:

I just added the Beatles Mono box set to my library.  The new discs have duplicate album names to the old discs.

So in the library, two albums named "Let it Be".  One of them has all the tracks tagged Artist/AlbumArtist=Beatles   and  the other has all the trackes tagged Artist/AlbumArtist=Beatles MONO

In standard mode, in the Albums view, I see TWO "Let it Be" albums, each with its own songs.  This is expected and desired.

In theater mode, in the Albums view, I see ONE "Let it Be" album, with each song listed twice.  This is neither expected nor desired.

What gives?

I notice that if I change the tags so that both albums have the same ARTIST but different ALBUMARTISTS then the album appears as a single album in theater view, with duplicated songs inside.  If both albums have the same values for ARTIST and ALBUMARTIST, the album then appears "stacked" again with duplicate songs inside.

Any idea how to make Theater Mode seperate the albums correctly as Standard Mode does?

Thanks!

Does anyone have an idea on this?   Am I doing something wrong or is it a bug?

Suggestion - name the albums "Let it Be" and "Let it Be [Mono]", set Artist to Beatles.  You can unset album artist, as album artist (auto) will do the right thing.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I know that I can give the albums different names to circumvent the grouping, but that does not address the issue:  Different albums, by different album-artists, but both albums with the same name.

I am already using Album Artist (auto) in both views.  Bringing up the tag window shows that both album artist auto and album artist are set to "The Beatles MONO" for all songs in the mono albums.

The Album field in Standard view for Album is treated specially, to avoid the problem you see.  It seems to be treated as [Album][Artist]  (or [Album Artist (auto)], I didn't check which one).

If you were to create your own AlbumTest field, a calculated field which takes its value from Album, and use it to create an Album view, you'll see the same grouping that you see in Theater View.  So it sounds like this special treatment is not being applied in Theater View.  You can add Album Artist (auto) as a second category in your Audio/Album customization in Options > Theater View.  This will allow drill down into the same-named albums.

Perhaps Matt or someone else can comment.

File selection throughout Theatre View is done with a hierarchy of "categories" explicitly defined in Options. The automatic grouping that happens in Standard View is simply not applicable—it doesn't do any grouping. I have no idea how your "Albums view" is defined, but unless you select the Artist "The Beatles MONO" first, then showing the tracks of both albums together is exactly what it should be doing. If you want to separate the Mono Box Set from other Albums using Artist, then you'll need to use a view in which you can select Artist then Album. Otherwise, do as MrC suggests in his first post.

Thanks for the clarification, guys.

I did some experimentation along the lines you suggested, and you're right, that's exactly the way theater mode works...

It's not the way it should work, but it's the way it does work.

It's counterintuitive in the extreme that building a theater mode view on the exact same criteria as a standard mode view yields different results.  Or even more egregiously "Adding  a Standard Mode view" to theater mode,  produces a duplicate of a view that yields different results from the original.

It's too bad they didn't build the same intelligence into Theater Mode as they did Standard in this regard.

Not really. As I pointed out, it doesn't do grouping. It's simply not applicable. If you selected 'Grouping: None' in Standard View, you'd get exactly the same result. Anything like what you seem to be expecting would be more like illogical and quite unlike "intelligence." What it does do couldn't be more straightforward. If you want to select items according to a particular category (like [Artist]), include that category in the view. If you want to refine that further, add another category (like [Album]). It doesn't do grouping because it's not needed. You can "group" anything by adding a category.
