TV problems
« on: November 15, 2011, 04:30:48 pm »

So I installed my new AverTVHD Duet, successfully scanned ota channels, and updated the program guide (ota).  However, when I click on a show to watch, the screen goes blank, sometimes I hear a bit of audio, then silence, and the playbar at the top shows "starting tv", then "n:nn/m:mm x of y", where n:nn is stuck at 0:03 and m:mm counts the seconds properly, and x of y is "3 of 28".  Bottom line, can't get any audio or video, just a playbar and a black screen.  ??

So I installed my new AverTVHD Duet

FYI, I have been using this card successfully with MC for years, in the US, and it's been very good.  I haven't done much recording with it recently in MC, so maybe something recently changed, but in general, MC works just fine with this card.  It records perfectly fine in WMC  x64 also, in case you want to test with that.

Just to rule out the card being the problem ;)

OK.  This rules out the H264 video and AAC audio issues.

What Operating System do you run MC on?  Red October Standard or Red October HQ?

Do you have strong signal for the channels you tried to play?

I finally got a chance to test this last night, and playback fails on my setup now also.  It pulls up the show information, with the next show information listed right below it, the screen is all black, and after about 5 seconds it fails saying something about not being able to use or allocate (can't remember now, sorry).

I just went to test again, to confirm the message, but now it's working again.  I don't think it is/was a signal quality issue, since I tested on several channels, and it's been working fine for years.

Oh, I think I might know what it was.  Last night, WMC was recording something while I tried, but only on 1 of the tuners.  That must have messed up MC's ability to use the second tuner.  This used to work fine in the past, I'm not sure when this problem started.

Anyway, hopefully that helps lead to a solution :)

I don't know if it matters, but the HD Duet is a single input, dual tuner; meaning it splits the signal from one COAX input to the card into 2 streams.

For a $70 card, I've been very happy with it so far.

If WMC is using one of the tuner, MC would have trouble handling it.  We decide on which tuner to use by looking at whether a tuner is already in use inside MC.  We can not tell if a tuner is being used externally.

Understandable, but I *think* it use do to work okay.

Is it possible, if the tuner you try first doesn't work, to just try the next one anyway?
