Loss of Stability
« on: March 23, 2003, 08:27:41 am »

Hi JRiver thanks for a good product.

I've been an MJ user for quite a while (I bought 8 right after it was officially released). I've moved 400 CDs onto my jukebox and I am PSCYHED.

However.... in the last few months MJ has started crashing regularly to the point where it keels over at least once every 5 tracks.

I keep windows fully patched and current per windows update. The box is dedicated and has nothing of interest installed aside from (always current) MJ8 and Monkey's Audio ("3.97F"), girder, and tightvnc.

Here's the MJ info
Media Jukebox PLUS 8.0.394
Install Path: C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\

CPU: Intel Pentium III 990 MHz MMX
Memory: Total - 523 MB, Free - 413 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows 2000  Workstation 5.0 Service Pack 3 (Build 2195)

Internet Explorer: 6.0.2800.1106
ComCtl32.dll: 5.50.4916.400
Shlwapi.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
Shell32.dll: 5.00.3502.6144
wnaspi32.dll: Internal ASPI Layer

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Could be some form of corruption.

I would suggest that you...backup license/lib...uninstall MJ...reboot...reinstall MJ...restore lic/lib

This problem started in version 8.0.289. Many users reported the bug in this forum and in Media Center 9 forum, but it was always ignored.

Ripping CD to WAV - stable
Ripping CD to MP3,OGG,APE - crash
Changing tags - stable
Converting to WAV,MP3,OGG,APE - crash

We don't ignore bugs.  But we can't always reproduce them.

In version 9, we have switched to CD ripping and burning software we wrote.  It gives us better quality control and a greater ability to fix problems.

In version 8, we used two different controls from other parties.  They usually worked fine, but not for everyone.

I've uninstalled MJ (less the registry entries) rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted and still the same thing.

I'm not ripping CDs. I am only playing back APE files which MA3.97 verifies as "OK".  Nothing fancy here folks.

Jim: are you saying I'm on my own here? Perhaps you can provide a debug build so you can trap the error and hopefully determine the cause?

MJ has been the heart of my audio PC system for a pretty good length of time without problems. Perhaps I can down grade to one of the older releases which worked flawlessly (for me)?

MJ was the best of the bunch when I did my farily exhaustive research a while back - I really like the product but I've hit a wall in terms of basic functionality (play a song from a file).

Help!
