DVD Size and Time Indexed Incorrectly
« on: December 04, 2011, 10:48:04 pm »

I'm having problems with the indexing of many of my DVDs. The run time is indicating unusually short durations. For example "Beowulf, The Director's Cut" is listed in MC as being 58 minutes in length and utilizing 2.7 GB of space. This runtime information is also reported on my PS3 via DLNA.

The movie actually runs for 1:54:00 (114 minutes), which is reported in both the MyMovies XML file and on the status bar when I play the movie directly from within MC itself. Rewriting the movie into a single VOB file and importing it into MC yields a duration of 56:51 and a file size of 4.6 GB.

I should also note that these same problems occur with the latest beta of MC 17.

How does MC derive DVD runtime and file size information? Any idea what might be causing these indexing problems?

Not sure if this is related, but version 17.0.45 fixed this:

1. Fixed: BD/DVD titles sometimes reported the wrong file size after import.

You might need to Update Library from Tags for the affected DVDs.

MrC, thanks for your prompt reply. I've have a test install of 17.0.38. How can I get 17.0.45, it doesn't seem to be listed on the download page.

Top o' the MC17 board:

Thanks. I didn't look there. Got it.

I tired updating, even deleting and then updating the tags as you suggested. Unfortunately, the problem still exists.

Oh well, I tried.

Just to be clear, when you Update Library from tags, MC re-reads the file.  The other way around, Update Tags from library re-writes the file.  It was the former that I thought might do the trick.

Thanks. Yes, I did it the right way around: Update Library from Tags.

Obviously, the problem is more insidious...

How does MC derive DVD runtime and file size information? Any idea what might be causing these indexing problems?

I've started doing all my testing now with MC 17.0.46 as this version seems to work the best, so maybe this thread needs to be moved?

Checking the IFO file for this movie using MediaInfo indicates that the duration is 1h 54m. Then I tried rewriting just the main title of the movie using DVDshrink and importing it; MC still thinks the duration is 57m. It seems no matter what I do, I can't get this title to read the actual time, and I have a number of other movies with the same symptom.

Interestingly, analyzing the same movie ripped into a single VOB file does indicate that it is 56m 57s, which is wrong, however, the file size is indicated as 4.6 GB which is correct.

So, I'd really like to understand how MC determines the file size and duration. That might lead me to understanding why this is happening. Perhaps one of the developers could answer this? Thanks!
