Total Lunar Eclipse: 2011-12-10
« on: December 10, 2011, 10:56:13 am »

The total eclipse this morning was amazing to watch.  I took almost 140 pictures, and was outside from about 4:40 to 6:45.  I'm freezing.  My fingers were too cold to distinguish the buttons on the camera.

I pushed a new point-n-shoot camera (Nikon Coolpix P500) to its limits.  But even with a tripod, and timer shots, there is still too much shake, blur and grain when the shutter is open for 2-4 seconds, and the 36x optical zoom is max'ed.

The next eclipse is in 2014.  I think I'll use the big-boy camera that will be up to the task.

The only decent moon shot I've ever taken was with a Canon 40D 1.4x TC, 2x TC and Canon 300mm f2.8 IS. Worked very well.  So I recommend something like that.  Only replace the 40D with a modern camera.
