I have a view listing all the composers.



If I select Beethoven in the view by selecting Work, I get all the works and each allows me to select Play and Names (the movements)


This can also be done by selecting Beethoven in the tree.
Now I get a totally different view, I can only select Play and no way to get the movements.
I don’t understand why doing the same via a view or via the tree yields totally different results.

At a guess, you may have the first view list style set to display Thumbnails and the second view to show Album Thmbnails.

Correct but the views remain different.
If I select the composer in the view, I stay in thumbnail mode displaying each individual work including the options to select the details.

If I select the composer in the tree the only way to display each individual work is to use Album Thumbnail but then I lose all the options on a mouse over.
If I switch to Thumbnail, I get a thumbnail for each individual movement.

I think the Tree selections show a File List (which has various list styles).

Selecting in a Categories view drills down into the configured sub-categories.

Correct. The Tree selections are shown in a File List view which is separate from and independent of a Categories or Panes view that might have been selected immediately before the selection. Files may be selected using one of three methods...

• panes, in a Panes View;
• categories, in a Categories View;
• in the Tree, which displays the results in a File List View.

The methods are independent and cannot be used in combination.

A Panes View provides the most powerful method for selecting files using multiple criteria in various orders and combinations. This is more likely needed for Classical music than Popular, which is easier to browse in a hierarchical Genre-Artist-Album fashion. One pane can be devoted to reproducing a tree, for occasions where that method of selecting or browsing is preferred.

Another one I  do think is inconsistent.
The upper pane list all compositions sorted by name.
The lower one gives the details sorted by artist

Remember, these are two different things (Categories vs. File List).  The File List has its own group by and sorting.

The file list sorting is controlled under Customize View > Set rules for file display... and set a Sort by order under Modify Results.

You've created your own custom view, and have defined the desired sort order for the categories, but not yet defined a sort order for the files list presentation.

But it didn't work.
In customize I set the sort to album but the file list remains sorted by artist.
What am I missing?

It seems your file list is set to Group By Album.  How do you want the file list Grouped and Sorted?

Album is handled specially by MC when it is used for grouping.  It magically becomes:

  Album by Artist    Year

To override that behavior, you can create your own custom library field, call it Album (VK's), set the Data to Calculated data and insert the field [Album] as the Expression.

Then, group your file lists by Album (VK's).

I have a field "Work".
As long as I don't use AlbumThumbnails for the list style I can get moere or less what I want.

I had to set the file list sort order when using Album Thumbnails.  Otherwise, it uses Default.

One set, the sort order is correct.
