I think that was written by Vince Guaraldi

I think I have about 30 copies of it from many artists, this is a very famous song.

If you listen to it with your eyes closed you will visualize your self in a bar off the a back street, the bar has the lights down low and is smoke filled, there is very few people in the bar, and they are trying to drink there problems away. the bar tender is washing glasses and smoking. there is only one lady in the bar and after the song ends she gets up with one of the men and leaves.

I remember having seen the movie on tv a long time ago. Very good !
There is a very nice cover of "Manha de Carnaval" by Joan Baez too, that is, in my opinion.

I never saw that movie, but I pay attention when someone mentions Bossa Nova. It is one of my many favorite styles of music. I owe a lot of thanks to Antonio Carlos Jobim for his many contributions. I wonder if many know that bossa nova merely means "New Music."

JimH, are you familiar with Salena Jones Album of Jobim's music on which Jobim sings along with her on a few of the tracks? Great work by Salena IMHO.

Vince Guaraldi. Isn't that the guy who does the "Peanuts/Charlie Brown" theme music?

Media Jukebox has a new Beta Tester. He seems to like what he is hearing. Must be the DSP.

To Zeville10:

Thanks for the recommendation. It's a couple of years since I have looked at a movie on TV, and perhaps 20 years since I saw one in a theatre. But I'll see if I can rent this one - for the music.

Holden,

I thought I owned most of the Jobim albums but have never heard of Salena Jones.  I just listened to a few of her tracks at CDNow and her voice is really lovely.  Is the CD entitled "Jobim With The Jobims"?  It's only available as an import from Japan and is $45 - ouch!

Shelly, yes, the album is Salena sings Jobim with the Jobims. Antonio Jobim joins her on two tracks and Paulo I think his name is - Jobim's son - joins her on four tracks. The price is outrageous - never could understand why. Guess that's why she is so little known. But I agree, she has a great voice and a great way with a song.

>>I think that was written by Vince Guaraldi<<

Actually it was written by Jobim but it was recorded on a classic jazz album by the Vince Guaraldi Trio called "Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus", later on the album was given a 2nd name "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" due to Guaraldi having a big hit with that track, and yes, that is the same Guaraldi who wrote the classic Charlie Brown score and turned a generation of kids on to jazz.

No, I have to tell a story about that.  Maybe 30 years after listening to the original bossa nova music as a college student, I rediscovered it, around 10 years ago.

Then a little later, I found the Agua de Marco track, probably never having heard it.  I listened to it about 100 times and finally mentioned it to my daughter, who was 18 then.

"Yes, Dad, I know that music.  I spent a few months listening to the words to memorize them.  When I go walking in the fields behind our house, I repeat them."

Is music passed on through genes?

I think it must be about building a house.

------

The Waters of March (Los Aguas de Marco)
Antonio Carlos Jobim
from the recording with Stan Getz: The Best of Two Worlds

A stick, a stone, it’s the end of the road,
It’s the rest of a stump, it’s a litter alone.
It’s a sliver of glass, it is light, it’s the sun,
It is night, it is death, it’s a trap, it’s a gun.

The oak when it groans, the fox in the brush,
The knot in the wood, the song of a thrush.
The mood of the wind, a cliff, a fall,
A scratch, a lump, it is nothing at all.

It’s the wind blowing free, it’s the end of the slope,
It’s a beam, it’s a void, it’s a hunch, it’s a hope.
A mile, a must, a thrust, a bump.
it’s a girl it’s a rhyme it’s a goat, it’s the mumps.

And the river bank talks of the waters of March,
It’s the end of the strain, it’s the joy in your heart.

The foot, the ground, the flesh and the bone,
The beat of the road, a sling shot stone.
A fish, a flash, a silvery glow,
A fight a bet, the range of the bull.

The bed of the whale, the end of the line,
The dismay in the face, it’s a loss, it’s a find.
A spear, a spike, a point, a nail,
A drip, a drop, the end of the tail

A truckload of bricks in the soft morning light,
The shot of a gun in the dead of the night.
The plane of the house, the body in bed,
And the car that got stuck, it’s the mud, it’s the mud.

Afloat, adrift, a flight, a wing,
A honk, a quail, it’s the promise of spring...

And the riverbank talks
Of the waters of March
It's the end of our strength
It's the joy in your heart

A snake
A stick
It is John
It is Joe
It's a phone
In your hand
And a cut
On your toe
A point
A crane
A bee
A bite
A blink
A buzzer
A sudden stroke of night

A pin
A needle
A sting
A pain
A snail
A riddle
A wasp
Or a stain

A pass in the mountains
A horse and a mule
In the distance the shells
Open shadows of blue

And the riverbank talks
Of the waters of March
It's the promise of love
In your heart in your heart

A stick
a stone
The end of the lude
The rest of the stump
A lonesome move
A sliver of glass
A life
A sun
A knife
A death
The end of a run

And the riverbank talks
Of the waters of March
It's the end of our strength
It's the joy in your heart

The music that Jobim recorded with Stan Getz was classic, I really LOVE the 2 albums he recorded with Sinatra though. I can listen to that anytime.
>>Is music passed on through genes?<<
Actually I think it is. My youngest daughter really loves a lot of my celtic, Sinatra, Beatles, Jethro Tull etc.. CD's. She has shown an incredible interest in music and my oldest daughter goes to The University of Delaware on a music scholarship. She plays the saxophone in the school marching band. I sort of got her interested in the Sax as I am a big John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins fan.

Here's an excellent discography of all Jobim's music, including, lyrics, partners, and background of his songs (there really was a "girl from Impanema" and her name was Heloisa, "Dindi" was named for a forest called "Dirindi", & "Waters of March" refers to the heavy end of summer rains, a wall Jobim was building in the mud, and rebirth of the spirit.)
