Subtitles stay forever on screen with matroska videos
« on: January 04, 2012, 02:45:24 pm »

Hi,

The subject says it all. I have a lot of movies converted from DVD to MKV with MakeMKV. J River do show the embedded (not separate srt) subtitles but they stay on the screen until the next spoken words come up, which is very annoying. I use a very much standard configuration (J River Video Engine) and have tride to change a few settings without result.

Can anything be done about this? The files including subtitles work perfectly in VLC.

Thx

Do you know what format the subtitles are (PGS, VOB, EVOB, etc.)?

Could you provide a sample file to matt at jriver dot com?

Thanks.

MKVExtractGUI.exe reports S_VOBSUB for the subtitles.

I don't have a file small enoough to e-mail, but I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for the fast response!

VOB subtitles should show for 5 seconds, or until the next VOB subtitle arrives.  Is that what you see, and is the 5 second show the problem?

No, they stay on screen for as long as until the next spoken dialouge comes up, be it ten seconds or several minutes.

I'm not sure why that would be.  Maybe there's an IDX file embedded to go with the VOB information, and our parser doesn't like something?  There are so many subtitle formats it's hard to guess.

However, I think it'd be an easy fix if I had a sample file.  Some users have used MediaFire.com or RapidShare.com to provide samples.

Ok, I just uploaded a sample file and sent the MediaFire link to your e-mail.

Thanks for the sample.

At around 0:53 (the time you mentioned), I see:

that blow across the surface of Mars at 300mph, ten months a year.

It stays for 5 seconds then goes away.

This is using 'Red October Standard' in Options > Video, and the latest MC 17.

Could you describe what you see?  What version of 17 are you using?

Thanks.

Yeah, that's the line that stays on screen for me until 1:29 when the line starting with "I'm Seeing..." is spoken.

Also, when I play the clip and turn the subtitles off completely, the last appearing subtitle stays on screen and never disappears.

MC 17.033. Red October Standard.

Please update to the latest Media Center.  17.0.62 is current.  It's at the top of this board.

Just did, and it works! What can I say... Never could imagine an upgrade from .33 to .62 within a version 17 of a piece of software would make a difference on this kind of rather fundamental problem. And I really thought I had the latest stable release. Live and learn...

Anyway, thanks a lot for your quick response!

I believe it was actually a fix in LAV filters that resolves this, but that version didn't make it into MC until sometime after the version you were using.

FYI, upgrading to the current version of MC is *almost* always a great first troubleshooting step.  Occasionally a weird issue makes it to the public builds, but it's very rare.

enjoy :)

It was a short-lived bug. It was fixed quickly after it was reported.

From the change log:
Quote
17.0.34 (11/14/2011)

2. Fixed: Subtitles could stick on the screen.

The bug appeared in the the build 17.0.33 that was released publicly November 12. The fix was released publicly November 18 in the build 17.0.38.

A link to the complete change log is in my signature.
