Does windows XP support `WASSAPI` or `ASIO`
« on: January 26, 2012, 07:23:50 am »

Hello,
Here goes a beginner question:

My brother bought the `Rega Dac`, that is connected (via USB) to a laptop with windows XP. I recommended him to use JRiver 17, but I am not sure if Windows XP support ASIO or WASSAPI or both.
If windows XP support ASIO or WASSAPI? Are the drivers built in JRiver 17, or does he have to download the ASIO  and WASSAPI drivers from another internet site? If so, do you have a trusted link?

I will appreciate any help on the subject
Thanks in advance

XP does not support WASAPI but it does support ASIO if your sound card/audio device supports it.

Thanks for your reply.

you wrote:"if your sound card/audio device supports it"
Does it mean that the Rega dac and the internal sound card of the laptop need to support ASIO?
Does the ASIO driver needs a separate installation, or it is built-in the Media Center 17?

Thanks again

If you use the USB output, you don't need a driver for the internal sound card.
If you want, a DAC with USB input actually is a DAC with an integrated sound card.

If the Rega DAC has no ASIO driver, you may try ASIO4ALL; which is a generic driver for not-ASIO devices.

EDIT: Ops!!! I forgot JR has Kernel Streaming, too  ::)
Just use the Kernel Streaming output mode (actually, ASIO4ALL convert ASIO to KS, so it's not needed if the program may use KS).

Thanks for the well appreciated help everyone,

can you confirm If I understood everything correctly:
1)The JRiver program does not have the ASIO driver built in, nor the WASSAPI driver.
2)I need to check if the `REGA DAC` (the hardware with the USB input) have a built in ASIO driver. If it does, I don`t have to do anything but download JRiver and configure it from `direct sound` to ASIO.
3)If the `REGA DAC` does not support ASIO, than I don`t need to download any driver (i.e. ASIO4ALL or Kernel Streaming), and only configure JRiver from `direct sound` to Kernel.

Is this correct?

Thanks again

1.  ASIO drivers come with the hardware, if they are available.

2.  If it has an ASIO driver, it will probably work.

3.  Just choose Kernel Streaming.
