What do i need to get my Bluray's into JRiver high quality?

Obviously a bluray reader/writer drive, but can MC17 do the rest, ripping etc?

Looking to have my entire music/movies collection in MC17 & control it all with a tablet or iPad

You need a program to read the disk. Many prefer AnyDVD HD (around $50 from Slysoft). AnyDVD can also rip the movie for you, or if you want to save drive space and only rip the movie (no bonus features, ads, extras, etc.) you can use a program like Clown_BD (free from Slysoft forum) or MakeMKV (also free).

It's also worth looking at Blu2MKV, available from the Slysoft forum under High Definition Software.  The GUI is very good.

One benefit of owning AnyDVD HD is that you can put a disc in the drive and play it without having to rip it first. This makes it easy to watch movies rented at Red Box or elsewhere. Blu2MKV and BluRip are GUI's that require several other pieces of software and AnyDVD HD to do the decoding. I've only used BluRip and thought it was a nice GUI.

I have AnyDVD HD and finally quit using anything other than JRiver to rip the movies. The file size is larger since I am ripping the whole disc, but it is so easy to just put the disc in and have JRiver download the cover art and movie info and rip it. Once the ripping is done the movie is in the library ready to play. Even my kids can rip a Blu-ray with JRiver since it is so easy.

For DVD's that I want to rip I use MakeMKV. This allows me to use madvr as the video renderer for playback and give better picture quality.

MadVR doesn't work with DVDs, but will with most  other formats. Therefore it's the mkv container in general that allows MadVR to do its thing, but other non-DVD formats/containers would too, e.g. .avi.

My LG PVR which connects to my MC server over DLNA refuses to read mkv's written by MakeMKV.  It can read BD/DVD fine but not if the .vob's are streamed over DLNA.  Dam annoying.  However, if I encode it using Handbrake into H.264 it's as happy as larry.  Obviously a problem with the LG but for people who have a set up like mine Handbrake or similar might help.

Started ripping DVD & Blu-ray video this weekend. Using MakeMKV to rip and HandBrake to transcode to H264. I can really appreciate my 8 core desktop now.

I have always viewed directly from optical disk and I can say the ripped videos look great. Poor quality DVD's actually seem to be improved (probably by the decombing filter). Audio is unchanged. MC is just as great to use with video files as it is with music. JRSS works great with video for up-mixing to 7.1.

MakeMKV is totally easy to use, no settings to worry about.

HandBrake took a little study and experimenting. For DVD's I just select the "High Profile" preset and pass-through the audio track I selected in MakeMKV.

For Blu-Ray's I do the same as DVD except I change "Anamorphic" from loose to strict (maintains 1920 x 1080), and turn off the video filters as the video quality is already good.
