encoding

So what is the recommended encoding to use to rip CDs into mp3s?  It's been awhile since I've done any ripping and don't recall which is the best one to use.  Many thanks.

With version 8, just download the mp3 encoder for 8.0.  It's the lame encoder.  I use VBR.

Always better, but not mp3, is APE/Monkey's Audio.  It's lossless.

APE is perfect quality.  Exactly the same sound as from a CD.  MP3 and WMA are both lossy, meaning some quality is sacrificed for compressibility.

The settings in APE are just for how long the encoder can spend to achieve the smallest possible file.  It will only make a very small difference ( less than 5 %) so I use normal.

I personally don't believe the MS marketing that WMA is better quality than MP3 in less space.

If you do a search at google, you will find a lot of debate on this, but, in the end, you will have to try it for yourself.  It's easy to do.

>> I recorded many of my discs at 192 kpbs WMA... Is that a mistake?
not if you can't hear any dif

I would rather stay with MP3 for right now, due to there are more programs out there and hardware that suports it.

Same here, not to mention (I didn't mention it) sharing files.
