Request for additional Handheld option
« on: February 22, 2012, 01:04:40 pm »

As a result of something installed by Windows Update last week, I started having strange sync problems with my (original model) Sansa Clip when using MTP mode. While I try and figure out (hopefully) which update broke things for me,  I switched the Clip to MSC mode, but encountered a new problem whereby it sees all my exported playlists as empty -- even though the M3U file looks fine and the files it references exist in the specified locations.

I used MP3Tag to create a playlist from the same files, and the Clip handles it just fine. I've narrowed it down to the lack of the #EXTM3U line at the top of the playlist exported by Media Center. Since I can't do much to improve the Clip's intelligence in this regard (the newer Clip+ models handle these playlists fine, in my experience), I thought I'd beg for that to be added to Media Center 17.

Note that elsewhere in Media Center, when a playlist is exported I can choose between simple M3U (just filenames) and extended M3U (adding the #EXTM3U at the top and an #EXTINF line for each track). Could that same choice be made available in the options for a selected handheld in the "Files, Paths & More" section?

Thanks as always.

I've had luck with the "remove leading dot" m3u playlist setting and sansa players.

Yeah, I tried that. I used that with my Clip+ just fine. But a broken clip has me back on the original Clip version; with that one, none of the M3U playlist options works, whether I place them in the root folder, /MUSIC, or /Playlists (I worked through most of the combos before I figured out it was the missing #EXTM3U in the file).

Thanks, though.

On further exploration, the MTP mode difficulties (that made me start playing with MSC) may in fact be a problem with Media Center 17. I noticed the problem after updating to 17.0.91 (but I hadn't done a sync in a while); I rolled back to 17.0.85 -- which I thought had been working for me -- and the problem still appeared (which is why I blamed something from the latest round of Windows Update hotfixes). As one last check, I rolled back even further to 17.0.82, and so far everything appears to be working properly.

My symptoms are these: I regularly sync a few smart playlists to my Clip that I use while exercising. The system has been working fine for months. With 17.0.91, I found that after syncing, my playlists on the Clip were empty. Re-syncing didn't fix things, so I reformatted the Clip, and the first sync after format worked fine. The next day, when I synced again, the playlists again showed up as blank -- and files that were on the Clip but no longer on the playlists were not being deleted as they should have been (I have "delete from handheld any files not in sync list" selected). I played around and the problem appeared consistently (working on the first sync post-format, problems on the second and beyond), although the playlists were sometimes just partially populated rather than fully blank.

I have multiple Clips around, and tested a second one to check that it wasn't a hardware issue with the Clip I regularly use. The same problems appear on it.

As noted above, if I roll back to 17.0.82 things seem to be working properly. So...it appears possible that something after 17.0.82 is causing my sync problems in MTP mode. I'll keep an eye on this and report back in case the problem appears again even on the older build.

[Mods: feel free to move this thread to the portables forum, which is probably where it belongs]

I would like to propose the same update to playlist sync files. It would be great to have extended M3U in the playlist here just as it is in Export Playlist. I would need it to sync up with "full paths without drive letter". I also used MP3Tag to create a playlist from the same files, but with a lot of files that can change often it would be very desirable to have them available in the file sync section. I an using a 32Gig J3.
