Internal volume and SQ
« on: February 27, 2012, 04:02:48 pm »

Flac downloads seem to be set at a balanced volume for my hardware; CD rips are notably loud and need attenuation via internal volume control. Does this not remove dynamic potential in the music by cutting down bits as my non geek interpretation of confusing lexis on other posts seems to suggest? If it does how can I set up JRiver to output a more even handed but nevertheless 'full fat' signal from ripped CD's?

Please help

Internal volume is fine to use.  You won't lose anything.

One of the many debates about digital versus analog volume control:

With regard to what I understand as available volume headroom using internal volume to be up to -40db without losing bits, I have to set output to 16bits as this is the limitation of the Rega Dac on usb and it will not play if set to 24 bit. Does this mean i am losing bits when attenuating with internal volume?
