Cover Art folder moved by MC, ask for permission
« on: March 03, 2012, 03:07:15 am »

MC just moved all my cover art across the network.
First I thought MC deleted it completely but then I found it moved between computers.

The case:
The problem occurred with my notebook where I set up a new MC library for testing
with files local to the laptop.

My main "productive" library lives and runs on my HTPC.
My media is stored on a separate Windows Server in the network.
My music is all flac and I store the cover art in a separate directory on the server.

MC on the laptop already had the following settings (options\file locations\cover art):
- In a specified folder
- Folder: pointing to my server directory
These settings must have been made by a previous library restore some time ago
and i hadn't bothered so far.

Because I didn't want to mess up my "productive" cover art directory I
changed the seetings.

First I changed it to:
- Audio mode: In the same folder as the file

Just to be sure that MC doesn't write in my "productive" cover art folder I edited
the setting in my test library.

I edited the Folder setting to:
- Folder: somewhere on my laptop

Then I closed the dialog and forgot about it.

A few hours later I found all my cover art missing on my server.
In a panic I was searching for it and found it on my laptop.

I was under the impression that I created a new Library on a completely different Computer
and edited a path where the cover art might be stored for THIS Computer/Library.
In MC16 this would have worked.

So my wish:

I never ever want MC to perform potentially destructive actions with the cover art
SILENTLY without asking for permission.
You should pop up a message asking if you want to move/copy the cover art.

And better: these cover art settings should not be global to a MC installation.
This should really be a library setting. This would minimize the danger of different
libraries disturbing each other.

E.g. for my flac library i could have a setting with a separate cover art directory
but for a mp3 library I could choose to store the image in the file's tag which I don't
want for my flacs.

I think this is not just cosmetics this could be a better design.

I don't get it. Didn't MC do exactly what you told it to do? Is the point of your post that you should get a "warning" from MC, or just to alert users to be aware that the program will do what you tell it to do regardless of the consequences?

It is not obvious that editing the Cover Art Folder will cause MC to move all your files
to that location.
All the years I have been using MC it didn't do that so for me it's not intuitive.

MC shouldn't do this automatically, at least ask if you want to move/copy/do nothing
so you don't have to pull the network plug before editing the path.

It should be a per library setting as well so you are able to keep different options
without interfering each other.

+1, especially if the specified folder is not used for the cover art as in your example ("In the same folder as the file").

It is also not obvious that changing the path for the "Cover Art" folder will move not only (album) cover art but also all your artist images. I would prefer the artist images on my fast SSD disc and the album art I keep in the special folder just as a backup stored on a slower and bigger hard drive that spins down when not in use.

+2

I too want cover art separate from my main files..... For Video ...

On MC 16 i copied cover art from the internet, and pasted from clipboard. MC copied the image to my cover art directory - this was good.

On MC 17 i do the same and my covert art is copied to my video directory ... i now have to physically move the cover art file to where i want it then, then 'Add from file'.

Is the location defined in Options ignored for Video?

The supported cover art naming is documented here:
