How to play WebM video?
« on: March 07, 2012, 09:09:42 am »

How can I get JRiver to play a WebM video file?

I have the CCCP pack installed.  I can double-click a webm file and it opens and plays in Media Center Classic.  I can also get it to play in Windows Media Center.  So I have the necessary codecs and stuff installed.  I just don't know how to get it to play in JRiver Media Center.  I have Red October Standard enabled.

If you rename it .mkv, does it play?

Make sure you're using Red October Standard.

That works!
Changing the extension to .mkv lets MC play it.
Is there a way to get MC to recognize the .webm extension so I don't have to remember to rename those files?

Ironically, I was trying to watch A Digital Media Primer for Geeks.  The downloads are offered in both .webm and .ogv formats.

They just need to add the file format to the supported extension list.  I'd look in an upcoming build.  Since they work, I'm sure they'll add it soon.

PS.  Matt, if you are going to have people test this, OGV is probably a better extension to use.  WebM is really OGV videos with a specific set of codecs supported, I think.  They're ugly codecs, but whatever...

There's nothing that fancy about WebM.  I can't imagine there would be any part of them that Red October wouldn't already handle.  I'd just add the extension to the support list.
