Volume Levelling = Making Compilation CD's
« on: March 18, 2003, 08:34:51 pm »

Hello & Thanks for reading this request ...

I like to make compilation CD's from my own CD collection & also from downloaded MP3 files. Trouble is the volume levels of all these files varies.

Is there a fool proof way of levelling the volumes of all the tracks (Wav, MP3, APE files etc) for a proposed compilation CD before you burn it?

Many thanks to anyone who can assist ... Rusty.

Please Note:  ???I was under the impression that I could analyse the Replay Gain for each track (Wav, MP3, APE etc), then set say a +9 figure in the DSP Studio - Manual Adjustement Global field, then play each track using Disk Writer to get the Volume Levelled result ... But I have discovered that this doesn't really work!

I see people are reading ... but no ones replying  :-[.

Can anyone please help  ??

I would've thought that Media Jukebox, with all it's bells & whistles, would have been able to easily handly something like this that MOST of us want to do & will always keep doing ... so why shouldn't it be EASY  ;D???

I think what you're asking for is Replay Gain and the files it's been applied to being written with RG to the CD.

That can be done with Media Center.  I'm not sure about MJ.

Thanks for your reply Jim H.

I am very disappointed to hear that Media Jukebox does not handle this sort of thing, I thought it did, that's why I purchased it.

The next question is ofcourse is ... does my current licence for Media Jukebox Version 8 allow me to freely use Media Centre, or will I be expected to also purchase that program?

Kindest regards - Rusty

For details of upgrading your license to MC9, look here:
http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/buy_faq_9.html

MC8 can level the volume before burning, but it's a rather longwinded solution. You have to analyse your tunes (File Properties->Tools), set the output device to Diskwriter, turn on Replay Gain (plus any other effects you want) in DSP Studio, then play the tracks. Diskwriter will write the audio to a wav file and you can burn this to a CD.
MC9 automates most of these steps, so if you can upgrade, you probably should.
