Pops and Clicks
« on: May 05, 2002, 10:15:04 am »

Since a few versions of MJ8 I get a lot of pops and clicks when I play mp3-files. I'm absolutely sure that i didn't change something in the setup, and other programs, for example winamp plays the same mp3's perfect, so I suppose it must be a problem with MJ8. Any hints or a solution for me?
I have about 6000 categorized and well sorted songs in my database so i'll definitely stay with MJ but not with clicks and pops. Please Help!

Thanks in Advance
Chris

Take a look at the "xp sounds" thread here.  It may help.

I run Win2000 and as I said, i didn't change my setup and until a few weeks (updates) ago, everything was o.k.
If something was wrong with my sound-card or my setup - why does winamp play the mp3's perfect?

I can't tell you, but I can tell you that it doesn't definitively point the finger at MJ.

Try switching playback from DirectSound to Wave Out.

Please report your System Info by going to Help/System Info and pasting it here.

Check carefully for any other sound software running.  Disable or uninstall.

Reinstall your sound card driver.

Did you try wave out?

Hi MJ
I am afraid to say I am also finding pops and clicks lately some what scary to me as MJ has worked surperbly till now
Of course it may have much to do with the CD itself "Copy protection and all that" I have meet that with the Natalie Imbruglia CD so it is not an MJ issue but??
what do the rest of you think about this ???

- There's no other sound software running.
- reinstalled sound card drivers with the newest ones.
- tried wave out.

- upgraded to 8.0.266

still lot of pops, clicks and noise.

Check your settings in the volume control for wav level.  Make sure other devices like microphone are muted (as a test).  Microphone will definitely cause problems on some machines.

Have you changed your audio card or upgrade drivers lately? Are you using a digital output audio card?

first of all, thanks for your support!

i upgraded the drivers for the soundcard. it's a soundblaster live! value.
but again - the problem happens since a few weeks (i really don't remember from which version on) and i didn't change something on my configuration. everything works great with winamp, realplayer and ms-mediaplayer but not with mj.

Anybody having this problem, please report as much of the following as possible.  We'll try to get to the bottom of it.

1) what type of media are you playing? (analog CD, digital CD, mp3, etc.)
2) does playing with the playback settings make any difference?
3) do the clicks seem to happen when some piece of the computer is stressed? (video card, mouse, etc.)
4) what type of motherboard do you have, and could you check a motherboard FAQ to see if other owners have the same problem. (most clicks are caused by MB / soundcard interactions)
5) do the clicks come and go?
6) if you disk write, the clicks aren't in the output are they? (it's bit-perfect in our tests)
7) what's the speed of your CPU
8) do the clicks go away if you minimize MJ and stop using the computer for anything else?
9) does disabling ALL DSP's make any difference?

Thanks.
