Right click menu MC tray icon not showing
« on: May 10, 2012, 03:18:53 pm »

This could be a compatibility issue with Windows 8 but when right clicking on the MC tray icon I'm not getting a pop up menu? I'm sure there used to be one.
Other application are showing popup menus.

Does the menu appear when left clicking as it does in Win7? Just wondering if the same menu coming up on left or right click may cause some strange behavior. ?

Left clicking causes MC to come and go from focus

It must be something with Win8, I get the Show Media Center, Close Media Server menu with both left and right click and no effect on focus.

That's the Media Server icon.

Try "Tools > Options > General > Interface > Minimize to system tray"

Enabling this will place an MC icon in the tray too, which should display a comprehensive right click menu.

I can't test because I binned Windows Eight. It's awful.

Is your post in response to Scolex Marko?
Fairly sure mines the MC icon.  The option you mention is checked.

Kind of agree about Windows 8.  Sadly it is just the Metro interface though.  I've been living with it for 8 months now and it just doesn't do anything for me as a desktop user.
The rest of the operating system though is pretty nice.  Part of the reason I'm keeping it is that it's just so fast.
For my aging computer it's done miracles!

Sorry, yes, response was for Scolex.

I remember XP did that for my old PIII PC when I moved from Win98. It was like I'd got myself a whole new PC it was so much faster and so much more stable. I skipped vista, was an instant fan of Windows 7, and ditched Windows 8 after having to resort to Google to find out how to shut it down!! I'll be stopping with 7 for some time to come yet.

Never noticed the setting before thanks for pointing it out.
+1 on binning win 8. I think it is going to go over like a lead balloon.
Sorry for the confusion.

OK this doesn't appear to be a Windows 8 bug.
I'm testing on a Windows 7 laptop and I'm seeing the same issue here.
I've discovered that if you left click and then right click  while MC is minimized then the menu pops up.

+1. Can't see this having too much traction - at least at my place.

Mr ChriZ, I'm not seeing the same, or at least, in my 30 second test, I failed to get the menu not appearing!!

The icon is set to "Only show notifications" and gives me the menu on every right click, and shows/hides the program on every left click. I don't normally use it, but I'll keep it active for a day or two and see if it plays up or not.

I get the same as Marko only difference being I have it set to "Show icon and notifications".
Win 7 x64 premium tested on 3 systems.
I am wondering if it is some setting that you have that is not typical.

Hmm fun.. Wonder what it could be.  The Windows 8x64 System is pretty much vanilla.
The windows 7-32bit system is my work dev system.  Anything can happen on that one.
Maybe it's just me... my right click is the wrong sort ;)

This is getting mysterious.  By random coincedence I needed to install a fresh copy of Windows 7 on one machine tonight.
The same issue is occuring on this brand new clean machine with my MC16 portable edition.  Not a single application installed... so it seems to be some preference/setting/plugin in MC that's causing this issue.

Are you using a portable install on the others?
Do you have the MC shell extension activated. options-->general-->shell options wouldn't think it would matter but ?
Curious what mouse brand/model are you using?

Just for grins press win+b (system tray focus) and then arrow to the MC icon and press shift+f10 (keyboard alternate for right click) to see what happens.

If not that (and the mouse isn't broken, but you tried a laptop, so)...

Maybe a driver?

You installed literally nothing but a vanilla Windows 7 install?  No drivers other than Auto-Update ones?  No images restored, custom Windows installation discs, or anything else weird?  Any settings in Windows you tweaked?  Any other devices attached to the system that could be interfering with the mouse, or just activating a weird mode in Windows (or a flaky driver)?

Lastly... It sounds like it could be an Accessibility option in Windows, maybe?  But if it was really a clean install, that doesn't make sense unless some hardware device "auto-activated" it.  And I don't know which one...

For the record:  I don't use that option, but I enabled it to test.  The right-click menu works for me here.

Brand new install of Windows 7 Ultimate fresh off of a  Microsoft Subscriber Pack DVD literally the first thing I loaded up was my portable edition of MC.  Nothing else installed.
No hardware similarities between these systems other than that they're all dell machines - different mice/keyboards.

Just for kicks I've installed a brand new clean edition of MC17 - I went into options and enabled minimize to tray and that's it but again no right click menu...

Never knew that one before!  The MC icon is highlighted but then no menu.

Do you have the MC shell extension activated. options-->general-->shell options wouldn't think it would matter but ?
Curious what mouse brand/model are you using?

I've tried toggling the shell extension options to no avail.

I've now got 4 different dell machines here:
One XPS M1530 Laptop (Windows 7 Ultimate)
One Dimension E521 Desktop (Windows 8 Consumer Preview)
One Vostro 200 Desktop (Windows XP)
One Optiplex 360 Desktop (Vista Business)

All these machines are exhibiting this same problem with clean installations of MC17 and my MC16 portable installation.

I've just installed MC17 on the 4th Dell machine.  This time a Windows Vista machine with the task bar in classic mode Windows XP style mode with Aero turned off.  Same again no right click.  One thing I've noticed is that very occasionally it does start working, but a left click on the icon to either show or hide MC then prevents it from working again.

Here's the clincher..  The Vostro has MC13 installed from way back when. MC13 is not exhibiting the same problem.
So what ever this issue is it started somewhere between 13 and 16. (Assuming no settings change in MC13 which effects the issue)

The mystery is why no one else is seeing it  ?

I believe the following is related:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=70817.0

When the issue is present no controls pop up on the MC Preview Pane in Windows 7/8

My video for comparison!  I've set Camstudio to highlight right clicks in red.  Left clicks are Green
At the very end you can see my forced way of making it pop up by left clicking and holding and then right clicking at the same time.

Received a brand new Dell Latitude at work today to replace my ageing XPS system.  Core i5.
64Bit Windows 7 Pro pre installed this time.

Brand new clean install of Media Center 17.
Exactly the same - right click doesn't work on tray icon.
At least 5 clean machines I've tried this on now with the same outcome.
The only thing in common with them is that they are Dells.
