kernel streaming 24/96 to DAC on usb 3.0 port
« on: May 18, 2012, 04:39:01 am »

Anyone has a clue why kernel streaming for 24/96 files to my DAC doesnt work flawless under usb 3.0?

Randomly (average 1 every 30 seconds) i hear glitches of less then a second only when playing 24/96 files under kernel streaming.

For me kernel streaming on a 3.0 usb port (NEC) to my DAC sounds best. Even better then WASAPI.

My configuration:
-Asus AMD e45m1 deluxe motherboard, on board GFX, LAN, WIRELESS
-Internal 2 GB HDD Seagate Green
-Windows 7 and 8 dualboot 64 bit
-4 GB RAM Kingston
-Isochrone USB DAC, Pink faun DAC 2
-Media center 17, kernel streaming, max buffer sizes, no use of DSP, memory playback

What i tried and didn't help:
- All variations of BIOS settings
- Optimizing windows for background processes
- Disabling windows paging file
- Disabling virus scanners / windows defender / firewalls
- Running latency checker program and disabling windows services
- Running files on separate usb 2.0 HDD
- Trying different USB cables
- Swapping memory to other bank
- Bigger power supply
- Older versions of media center 17
- Windows 8 64 bit

Strange thing is:
- With WASAPI no problems for 24/96 files. Still Kernel streaming sounds best.
- With usb 2.0 port no problems for 24/96 files. Still usb 2.0 sounds best.

Anyone can help? Will be greatly appreciated.

Can’t help you with the specifics
I know there are issues with both Win64 and USB3 in relation to audio.
In case of USB3 it shouldn’t because it is supposed to be backwards compatible with USB2
Your DAC probably has a USB2 receiver, not a USB3.
As it is limited to 24/96 it uses full speed, not USB2 high speed.
Maybe there is an issue here.
Update drivers if available

Sometimes it helps to lower the buffer in Output Mode Settings.
In case of WASAPI I do get glitches with a high buffer size

Thanks for the quick reply...

Indeed my DAC is usb 2.0 and not a 3.0 dac. It doesn't have any drivers on its own. And yes it is limited to 24/96 on usb input.

I tried updating the usb 3.0 drivers but that didnt do it for me.

I will try to lower the buffer size but i think i already did that. Just maybe repeat it to make sure.

I was thinking maybe the WDM audio drivers play a role in this? This because with WASAPI i dont have any problems, only with Kernel streaming.

But that is just a guess since i dont know much on the driver topic in relation to the output mode setting.

Try setting the option called "Present 24 bit data in a 32 bit package".

That option "Present 24 bit data in a 32 bit package" is not avaiable under kernel steaming.

That option is available under WASAPI but i got the problem with kernel streaming.

In my audio set up kernel streaming sounds better then the WASAPI.
