Media Jukebox 8.0.265 Beta Available...
« on: May 02, 2002, 10:42:27 am »

Media Jukebox 8.0.265 beta is available:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaJukebox8.exe

WARNING: This is beta software, do not download and install it if you are not sure of your abilities to deal with bugs.

Please backup your library and your license.

(note: you can use "Help->Check for Updates" if you've installed a previous beta of 8.0 to reduce the download size)

History:
1. Fixed: First right-click would not always invoke a menu.
2. Fixed: Drop target tooltip would show on "Start" tree item.
3. NEW: Added a "Skip analyzed files" option to the Replay Gain dialog.
4. Fixed: Burn dialog could be partially obscured on some systems.
5. NEW: Added "eject CD after ripping" option on devices settings page.
6. Changed: Decreased the default playback latency. (performance slider)
7. Changed: CD burning "too long filename" message now includes a cancel button.
8. Fixed: Improved edge "snapping" of display in windowed mode.
9. Fixed: Media Jukebox would slowly leak GDI resources.
10. Changed: TV -- It will not ask a first-time user to choose a device if there is only one device in the list. Also the first item is selected in the list, so the combobox does not appear empty.
11. Fixed: With Brooktree based cards (ATI TV Wonder and Hauppauge WinTV) and WDM driver, TV uses 100% (or near 100%) CPU.
12. Fixed: With TV Wonder VE card and WDM driver, there was no sound sometimes.
13. Fixed: Double clicking on .mjr registration file didn't register the license.
14. Fixed: Right-click -> create playlist would not create the proper right view.

When MJ is in Playing Now and the option "Auto-Hide Bars" is turned off and "resize display for bars" is turned on
and my visualisations/play list is half screen :
- I have a visualisation with text at the bottom, when switching from "playing now" to "media library" and back, the
visualisation gets resized properly so my text is above my toolbar.

- Minimize MJ to the System Tray, Double click on the system Tray icon to maximize again, then visualisations are not resized, my text is underneath the
toolbar.

This is happening already a long time (lots of builds ago)

If you want, I'll send a visualisation where I have the problem with

Greetings!

Seems that over the last 2-3 build the player pops and clicks. I know it must be MJ as my other player software (MS Media & RealOne) do not exhibit this behaviour. Any clues?

DELL 5000e Laptop with ESS Maestro sound card with upto date drivers etc. Clicks/pops also seem to come and go btw.

Listening to: 'Gets Me Through' from 'Down To Earth' by 'Ozzy Osbourne' on Media Jukebox

Is is possible to have the "Send To/Playlist" in trees as the "Quickplay/Playlists" is ?

Then it would be consistent for the whole of MJ and more organised.

I have more than 100 playlists in several groups which makes it difficult to read now.

>Is is possible to have the "Send To/Playlist" in trees as the "Quickplay/Playlists" is ?

Sorry, not in version 8.0.  They're different menu systems, so it's not a trivial change.

>Seems that over the last 2-3 build the player pops and clicks.

Play around with your playback settings and let us know if it helps. (WaveOut vs. DirectSound, Advanced -> Performance -> More Skip Resistant, etc.) (make sure you stop in between setting changes)  Normally clicks are hardware based, so motherboard or sound card drivers may help as well.

Thanks.

Hi - RE: pops and clicks. Tried your suggestions. Went through all OUTPUT settings with different performance settings as well. The only result was that it either got worse or just a little better (using default/recommended settings) but the clicks never go away. This is something that is unique to builds afer 239. In addition, MJ7 doesn't do it on the same machine - have 2 identical dell 5000e,s o one with mj8 the other with mj7. Can't be the hw as I've stated Media player, realone, musicmatch and winamp do not exhibit the behaviour. In fact build 239 was the best playback IMHO build. Subsequent builds all had some minor clicks but the last 3 have gotten worse - build 263 started getting really bad in this regard.

thanks, dennis

Hi - Odd behaviour. I clicked on Media Library and then right clicked on a file, hit select all, and then properties. I have 2500|PLS| files.

The window opened and the counter started couting the files etc. Deep Purple - Woman from Tokyo was playing. The song got to about 30 seconds from the end and sound output stopped - MJ looked like it was playing but the time counter didn't move on and the slider didn't move.

After a few minutes the properties collection completed and MJ simply started with the next song like nothing had happened. I didn't hit the player controls etc.

Nothing else was running on my system

When playing a CD, if you right click on tray icon and click on Playing Now, all it shows is track numbers not the names of the songs(Track01.cda).
I have never noticed this before. Is this a bug? The CD is orginal not a burned cd.  Playing now  shows the names of the songs.

Why is it not possible to "Print track list on inside front cover" in the CD label wizard ?

Is there an option I have to turn on first ?

Select Media: Plain Paper
Select Generic with fold over front
Go back and select back to front cover
Than you can select Print track list on inside front cover.

Are you can select a pre-printed media type .

This build has 2 bugs that I've found at this point.

Bug 1 - If I play a song in my playlist and click the stop button after the song is finished and then double click on another song elsewhere in the playlist MJ plays the last note of the previous song before it starts playing the new song that I've doubled clicked on. I did notice however that if you play a song, close MJ, reopen & double click on a song the last note does NOT play. It appears that MJ does not completely flush the soundcard unless you close & restart it.

Bug 2 - If I right click on the MJ system tray icon and choose Playlist all 386 songs in my current playlist are reflected. However, when I click the down arrow to look for a song to play from the Playlist it won't stop scrolling down until it gets to the end & vise-versa. The PageUp and PageDown works ok but not scrolling.

In spite of these 2 bugs this build is vastly improved over an earlier version I have been running. (8.0.218) GREAT JOB!!!

The partial obscurity is partially fixed: Right edge is still covered by about the width of a slider.

Looking good, campers.

Bugs:
1. With Web Media, Start or TV Tuner highlighted and the focus in the Contents View window (most right window in TV Tuner), all the MJ shortcut keys (like Ctrl-E) don't work!!

2. When returning from mini-me to MEGA-ME mode, MJ does not remember where you were in MEGA-ME prior to going to mini-me mode...MJ always jumps to the Playing Now node on return from mini-me.

I still get clicks when starting mp3 playback from stopped.

The Tekno skin in maximized seems to run off the top and bottom of my display.   At the top, the top of the letters of "MEDIA JUKEBOX" are cut off.  At the bottom, there is no bottom difference between the blue and the gray bottom edges; the gray should hang down a little farther than the blue part.

Are you still adding names to the credit for beta testers?

BTW, I like the new splash screen.

Stebajo,
Media Server will allow you three connections from other PC's.  It's for personal use only.  Doesn't require any authorization.  Try it.  You can start the server, then connect to it from the same machine.

If you need more help, please start a new thread.

OK, so I'm reading the bugs fixed and see...
>>>3. NEW: Added a "Skip analyzed files" option to the Replay Gain dialog
and I think NO, NO, NO, it ALREADY skips analyzed files, it had to re-analyze analyzed files!
Then I install and look at the option and realize if you uncheck the box it re-analyzes
analyzed files.   DUH, and thank you!

Still playing with replay gain.
It seems the behaviour where only the first bit of a track are analyzed and the radio gain is incorrect only happens on multi-cpu systems.  On my 2 laptops, the playback skips but the entire track is analyzed and the radio gain is correct.  If I force my dual 1.8ghz server to single CPU mode, same thing:  tracks are fully and correctly analyzed (much fewer skips, though).   I guess it's not a problem as long as I know about it.

I noticed a problem with the Skin Manager...

I open the Skin Manager (Settings -> Skin Manager -> mini-me), choose a new skin (let's say switching from UpperLeft to eutow) by double clicking on it. The player switches to mini-me mode in the new skin. When I switch back to MEGA-ME mode the Skin Manager is still open, and the new mini-me skin doesn't have the arrow next to it. If I then either click Cancel or the close button (the X), the Skin Manager closes. But, if I then switch to mini-me and back to MEGA-ME, it's open again. In order to get it to stay closed with the new skin I need to be in MEGA-ME mode, click X or Cancel to close it, then re-open the Skin Manager. Then it will show the correct skin selected. Then I can close the Skin Manager, switch to mini-me, back to MEGA-ME, and not have the Skin Manager re-open.

Ok, got that. Next Page

If you need any clarification on this let me know.

Thanks,

Vince

Audit time! Next Page

Bugs

Remote Control : Next\Previous Playlists skip Smartlists.
Sorry, this is one that just keeps slipping through the cracks and it's something I use all the time...

MEGA-ME Skinning : Resizing Statistics shows flashes of the transparent color (Green Eyes skin - upper right hand corner of Stats window as you shrink it).

MEGA-ME Skinning : I occasionally get this drawing error when I exit from Replay Gain Analysis.

Download Manager : If I start DM from MJ's Tools menu, or from it's Start Menu Shortcut, and I'm not connected to the internet, I get the "Unable to find phonebook entry" error message. This doesn't happen on Windows Startup because of the /WinStartup switch. I could edit the shortcut in the Start Menu manually, but I obviously can't do that with the DM option in MJ's Tools menu.

CD Rip : When viewing the log for Digital Secure, if I select a section and hit "Play Selection", MJ always just says "Please Select Files To Play"

Display (Track Info) : If "Enable Scroll Bars" is on, "Auto-Hide Bars" is on, and "Resize Display for Bars" is off, then you can't get to the horizontal scroll bar. Perhaps "Resize Display for Bars" should be always on for Track Info when "Enable Scroll Bars" is on?

I'm still getting this when I try to install the Sleep Timer.

Handhelds (Nomad II) : Attempting "Download to PC" on multiple files doesn't work. Repeated attempts caused the Nomad to power down (it's not the general timeout) and then MJ shuts down with no error message.

Handhelds (Nomad II) : "Download to PC" doesn't remember the last place I downloaded to.

Handhelds (Nomad II) : "Download to PC" doesn't work correctly. Some songs that are downloaded don't play all the way through (MJ gets to a certain point and then just moves on even though the timer and slider aren't anyway near the end), others just don't play at all. These were all WMA 64kbps files.

If my mouse is over a toolbar button that's right above the Drop Target, the Drop Target tooltip appears.

Going from MEGA-ME to mini-me and back always returns to Playing Now regardless of where I was when I left MEGA-ME.

Bug - Pesky Tab Order:
1. My constant nag to get the UI and those tab orders correct.  The Options screens for General, Tree & View Settings and (now) Device Settings all have incorrect tab orders in them.  Everytime a developer adds a new control and/or re-arranges a few controls, I notice they forget to update/fix the tab order Next Page ...it only takes 10 seconds to get each screen right (LOL).

This started with 263 but still seems to be in 265.
I have a problem with "Rename from Properties" not naming/moving the files correctly.

a) I have a playlist with 140 songs all in a seperate directory
b) I select all
c) Right click & Properties
d) Select "Rename from Properties" indicate Directory = Artist, Filename = Artist - Album - Name - Track#
e) receive prompt about rename/move with a before and after filename. The after filename is correct
f) tell it to proceed and not to prompt again
g) everything completes but some filenames and directory names are messed up.
h) MJ Data base entries are messed up as well

For example:

File: e:\mp3\Doug50\Burton Cummings - The Best of Burton Cummings - Break it to them Gently

get renamed to

e:\mp3\Burton\Burton - Cummings - The Best of Burton Cummings - Break it to them Gently
            ****** 1      ** 2

1) incorrect directory name
2) dash put between artists first name and last name (note: one word artists works okay eg. ABBA )

The MJ Database the values are
                      Artist: Burton
                      Album:  Cummings
Name  : The Best of Burton Cummings - Break it to them Gently
-----------------------

I was just trying to move these files into the normal directory structure. I tried the Right Click Copy/Move files command but it would not write over files if a file by the same name existed (only tried this in beta 263).

Bug in 8.0.265beta - CD names not shown correctly

Still the process of reading the content of MP3 CDs is not real good. If
a CD, that shows up in the explorer as 'Complete_CDs_01', is read, the
section File Location shows (0x5601E92A) and the section CD and DVD media a
CD named 'unassigned'. If I add mores CDs, it still shows a single
'unassigned' folder instead of the real name of the CD. Out of 5 CDs
'Complete_CDs_01' through 'Complete_CDs_05' only the last showed with
correct name under CD and DVD media.

To show the content of a specific CD is therefore not straight forward!

Can this be changed?

My system: NT 4.0 with all SPs, 500 Mhz PIII, 198MB RAM

urlybird, are you sure that "Burton" wasn't what MJ thought the artist was?  If that were the case, then how it renamed everything would be correct.

Let us know. (maybe in a new thread)

    Thanks.

    Doof,

Thanks for the report. The new Plug-in(3.0.11) should fix the path and the multiple file upload problems. In regards to the playback problem, I could not duplicate this. I transferred three WMA 64kbps files to and back from my Nomad II successfully. Could you retry this with the new plugin and if you still have the problem, see if you have a similar problem when using Creative's software. If not, please email me a few of the problem files (steve@jriver.com) and I will test them here.

    Thanks again.

I'm still seeing the bug (listed as fixed in 8.0.263) that double-clicking on a playlist in shuffle mode always plays the first track in the list, rather than a random one.

My workaround is to put a half-second-long dummy track in my library and name it so it comes first in all my lists.

internal mpc encoder still gets stuck sometimes while encoding.

When I select the song that the encoder is failing to encode and want to click "cancel", it does say "cancelling"
next to that song in cd copy window, but nothing happens besides that.

The ripper and encoder does not continue to encode the other song down in the list.

MJ freezes and I have to ctrl-alt-delete it away.

I'm a bit frustrated by the focus shift when sending tracks from the media library to "playing now". Using the context sensitive menu, many of the commands leave the context in the media library, though two changes the focus to the 'Playing Now' list.  Can they all act similarly, such that none of them automatically change the user focus.  The ideal behavior for the two 'rogue' items would be like "Send to->Next Pagelaying Now->Add (Play Now)" where the focus stays put, but the tracks start playing immediately.

    Focus Stays in Media Library
    "Add to playing now"
"Send to->Next Pagelaying Now->Add (To End)"
"Send to->Next Pagelaying Now->Add (To Beginning)"
"Send to->Next Pagelaying Now->Add (As Next To Play)"
"Send to->Next Pagelaying Now->Add (Play Now)"
    "Send to->Next Pagelaying Now->Add (Shuffle)"

    Focus Changes to Playing Now
    "Play"
    "Send to->Next Pagelaying Now->Replace"

I am unable to use the paste button to successfully paste an image for album art.

The location field below the image is properly updated but the image itself is a 'black' box.

TV does not stay in Pal mode after reboot

Drivers seem to reset after rebooting and do not remember previous settings. I will look into it and see if I can save the settings and set it on start.

urlybird> Not sure if this is what you were doing, but I've noticed that MJ interprets "ARTIST - ALBUM" differently than "ARTIST-ALBUM". In the first example, it would interpret the space between ARTIST and - as the seperator character and so a two word Artist field would be split into Artist and Album.

Steve> Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing here... the files I'm having trouble playing after downloading from the Nomad to the PC are being played on the PC by MJ. I'm not transferring them back to the Nomad and then trying to play them. With two random picks off of my Nomad, one plays partway through and then stops (even though the progress indicator and time display indicates there is more) and another just doesn't play at all. These are WMA 64kbps files (again, just to make sure we're comparing apples to apples - I remember the weird progress indicator resets you were struggling with turned out to only happen with WMA files as well).

    Maximize icon
If you're in the green eyes skin and maximize, the maximize icon in the upper right corner (one rectangle) is not changed to the resize icon (two rectangles).
This problem is present since many builds ago

    Great work done: compliments

    Longtime Bug:
    1. Using Shift|PLS|Del in mini-me's Playlist does not work correctly and sometimes deletes incorrect files!!  This is bad if you also check the Delete from hard drive option...the wrong files get deleted!!  I was using Shift|PLS|Del in mini-me mode while downloading from eMusic.  The Download Manager was adding the new tracks to the MJ Playlist (not importing them...only adding) and I was reviewing them (while in mini-me mode).  It looked like Shift|PLS|Del attempts would not delete more that one track at a time even though I had multiple tracks selected.  Then, when I only had two tracks in my Playlist, I selected track #2 and used Shift|PLS|Del and MJ deleted track #1 (which was currently playing...playback stopped)...and did NOT update the Playlist track display (still two tracks shown...MJ thought).

    Hey Doof,
I guess this was what I was trying to say when I posted earlier that MJ 8.0 does not recognize the artist. It puts it all together as one and does not separate it. Any idea if this can be fixed? When I burn a CD from mp3's and I play it back on MJ the artist field in the player says "unknown"

I have verified that Settings > Options > General "Update tags when file info changes" is checked. I cannot find the setting for "Always support extended tag fields" or I would have verified this as well. When I try to change the artist field from "The Bears" to "Bears, The" I get the message

These files are not in use or read only.
This does seem to update the field temporarily as the files no longer appear under "The Bears" but under "Bears, The" after closing and reopening the Artist/Album list tree but upon closing and restarting MJ the artist has reverted to "The Bears" Appologies to the Sat Night Live Chicago Bears Fan crew for the very poor impression but what am I missing here?

In this build my CPU cycles are very high and slowing down my P4 2ghz machine. I reverted back to 264 and CPU usage is around 10 percent, but with 265 it is over 50 percent. I had to reboot to get things to speed back up. Once I started MJ8 265 the slow down would occur.

Minor bug...when starting MJ does not get window focus. If there are oter apps active MJ starts underneath those apps requiring a click on the taskbar to give it focus and bring it to the front.

    mini-me Bug:
    1. The mini-me Quick Play list for my CD & DVD (customized) view scheme does not display the actual CD track name (which is shown fine in MEGA-ME mode for the same CD & DVD view scheme).  Instead the Quick Play menu just shows Track01.cda, Track02.cda, etc.

    See:

-Since many builds in Web Media searching stations by i.e. DSL/CABLE/LAN speed gives a lot of low speed stations (7-16k); it was working better on 7.x build.

-Since 5-6 builds when I click on Go Start (was Home before) in left tree I get an error because MJ can't find HomePage index.htm. If I right click on Go Start and Update Web Pages, it downloads the new Web Pages, but never shows them.
