  • LIFE IS A RADIO... CRANK IT UP TO 11!

i have a main library that is on my windows server 2008 that all pc's/devices connect to to view our "family library"

When i connect to it with one of my clients that has it's own library ( an adult library ) The adult library thumbnails are stored on the server 2008 A:\Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\Workstation1\Thumbnails it's showing my adult library thumbnails on the Family library thumbnails.. it's not loading the default thumbnails for the "Family library" from the server.

I've went into A:\Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\Workstation1\Thumbnails and there is only one folder named... {C007F48C-8685-446A-A925-EDD5D80A4A7E}if i delete that folder, then load the family library on the client then it will download/build the thumbnail appropriately. But if i got back to client where adult library is located then do an auto import, then it rebuilds all the thumbnails for that library, but the next time i connect to family library then it uses the adult thumbnails for the Family library files.

How do i get the client thumbnails for family library to be separate from the family library thumbnails? is it possible to have 2 thumbnail folders? 1 for clients, and 1 for adult library?
Thank You.

Probably the libraries have the same internal ID code, {C007F48C-8685-446A-A925-EDD5D80A4A7E}, and thus they share the thumbnail folder. Did you use a copy of one library as the basis for the other?

To fix the issue you can use the clone feature and create a new copy of one of the libraries. A cloned library will have a new unique ID code.

Great troubleshooting Alex.. I didnt even notice that!

on server drive (installs) i made separate folders for all pc's

A:\Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\Workstation1\Thumbnails
A:\Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\SERVER\Thumbnails
A:\Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\Xtacy HTPC\Thumbnails
A:\Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\Garage\Thumbnails
A:\Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\Work Pc\Thumbnails

Workstation 1 and Server both have the EXACT same thumbnail folder name {C007F48C-8685-446A-A925-EDD5D80A4A7E} the other pc's and thumbnail folders have nothing in them.. maybe due to them not having libraries? they just connect to SERVER and then download thumbnails when connected?
Could you elaborate please on how to fix this, sorry I dont understand your fix... and really don't understand what i did wrong? i just installed jriver 17 on workstation, went to settings thumbnail location and told jriver to save thumbnails here -Server\A:\Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\Workstation1\Thumbnails

I always recommend to use a local thumbnail folder even if it is not in the default location in appdata, but I suppose you have a good reason to use a server location.

Seems like the local "adult" library creates its thumbnails to the "A:\Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\SERVER\Thumbnails" folder when you load it. Are you sure you have done the registry edit correctly?

However, creating a unique library ID code should solve the issue in any case. You can find my instructions for cloning a library here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=72025.msg487631#msg487631

to see if you want me to run more test before preceding.

in the Workstation Registry i have it set to \\SERVER\Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\Workstation1\Thumbnails

And when on the Workstation if i click playing now\playing from SERVER then when it loads the server files (Family Library) then instead of them all being blank and it gradually loading all the thumbs. many of the files already have Thumbs... but they are adult thumbs (the odd thing after looking closer is that all the thumbnails it's loading. are ACTUALLY adult pictures (Images) on top of the (family library files)

Screenshot is an example of what's going on. notice Cafe Del Mar.. all music files from the FAMILY library have adult pictures instead of the Cafe Del Mar cover art, but the album before and after Cafe Del Mar are the correct cover art.

Thanks Alex

You need to get your libraries to have unique IDs.  Otherwise you will have lots of problems.  Alex posted instructions above.

For anyone else reading along, please use Media Center to create / clone libraries so this doesn't happen.  If you clone the library outside Media Center, you'll have two libraries with the same ID and have a mess with settings and thumbnails.

quick question.. Should my path be on the machine where jriver is located? or can i put the path onto the server under \Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\Workstation1\Library Path that way all jriver libraries and paths are on the server in same folder named libraries... for easy backups.

Thanks

Backing up the more or less temporary thumbnails is quite unnecessary. In case something unexpected happens and the already created thumbnails get lost or out of sync, MC recreates them automatically or can be easily forced to recreate them. It is enough that the library and the actual cover art source files (either embedded or externally linked cover art) are backed up.

Having a copy of an already created thumbnail cache is useful only if you regularly want to replicate your complete MC setup on more than one PC. In that case you must copy an exact snapshot (the state of a system at a particular point in time) of the library and the thumbnail files from one PC to another. When you do this both MC instances must be closed to avoid getting the thumbnails out of sync.

I think that even if you have a very fast LAN and server, accessing locally stored thumbnails would be faster on a modern PC that has a reasonably fast local drive. The network connections have always some additional latency. You should be able to see better performance with local thumbnails when you browse views that access lots of thumbnails at the same time. The reason to use a dedicated and optimized thumbnail cache in the first place is the faster access speed. It would be way too slow to read and decode each and every original cover art source image when the views are browsed.

You can use a single cover art repository that is located in a single shared folder for all computers and libraries if you want to simplify your setup. This is separate from the thumbnail cache. A cover art source file is not regularly accessed after its thumbnail has been created. Set the path in Options > File Location > Cover Art > Folder... It may be is useful to set this even if you use the "Audio mode: In the same folder as file" option because not all "art" can be stored in the media files' folders or inside the files' tags (Artist Images, cover art for optical media, etc).

thanks for detailed info... Just so i understand correctly

So for all machines have the path be on that specific machine? located near here - C:\Users\joeblow\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 17\Library (this is the one i found that i think jriver made.. which would be my bad library you and matt speak of) so for the new path on the workstation should i make it be C:\Users\joeblow\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 17\adult library ?

cover arts for all machines can be in ONE folder on server drive \Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\Cover arts VIA Options > File Location > Cover Art > Folder

And libraries, jriver conversion cache, Playlists, and thumbnails for all machines can be saved to appropriate folder on server via -
A:\Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\Workstation1\
A:\Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\SERVER\
A:\Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\Xtacy HTPC\
A:\Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\Garage\
A:\Installs\Audio - Visual Proggies\Media Center\LIBRARIES\Work Pc\

And once i get the clone's and verify is working.. then I'm assuming i should delete C:\Users\joeblow\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 17\Library ?
Does this look correct?
Thanks Alex!

We don't recommend registry editing to move the thumbnails.

It's fine to share a cover art folder, but you should let the program put thumbnails in the default location.

Matt Could you give me the path of the default location please... All my pc's i had them moved via registry due to fear of filling up OS drives (SSD's) but it looks like it has shrunk through time(maybe due to tweaking you guys have done?) It use to be over 25GB, but after looking now it's 14.3GB which is do-able.
Thank you

I think you can just delete (or rename) the registry edit and it will use the default.

I'm aware that some people successfully move thumbnails.  But it sort of sounds like you're sharing them across machines, and that's not something we've tested or even tried to support.  So it would be easy to end up with more problems like you're having in this thread.

ok.. changed all settings, and did the clone :)

one more question... How do I get rid of the Main library? when i goto playing now, playing from then right click on the old library (adult) the delete option is greyed out. i have verified that the new clone (adult) is loaded. and i also tried task manager close media center 17 then re-opening and trying to delete it but it's still greyed out.
Thanks.

You can't delete it, but you can rename it.

The program requires a library at the stock location that it knows it will be able to load.

ok.. is it possible by chance to clone to that stock location? all i need for that pc is the (adult library) and access to the other pc's libraries (Family Library)

I guess this is why i'm confused on why it didnt give me a unique id for that library?

Or can i just delete/clear the Main library, then it will give me a unique Id, then just put in the paths for the media files in auto import?

well i deleted the clone. then went to main library after changing thumbnail location back to default - C:\Users\Xtacy\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 17\Thumbnails
then i deleted all thumbs from main machine, and removed the registry entry. then i reimported the adult files. it built all thumbs (2 hours) then i went to playing now playing from server.. and it loaded the family library. and it loaded those thumbnails. and i still have adult thumbnails for some files.

is there another way to get main library to work by giving it a different "unique" id?
Thanks

If you clone the library outside Media Center, you'll have two libraries with the same ID and have a mess with settings and thumbnails.

This is exactly true.  I used to have all sorts of problems because of badly cloned libraries with the Auto-Import settings.  I think I've finally eradicated it all, but definitely use the built-in Clone Library tool whenever you need to create a new copy.

so there is no way around it... one has to have a main library, and a clone library (Adult Library)?

I'm confused.

If you have two libraries, they can't have the same unique identifier.  Ever.  Even if you move them to other machines, it is a bad idea.  If they ever "meet" on the same machine (via sharing or whatever) then bad things happen.

The way you create a new copy of an existing library, and give it a new GUID, is to use MC's built-in clone tool.

So, if you screwed this up at some point in the past, and you NOW have one machine that has two libraries with matching IDs, you need to fix it.  Say you have Library A (the original) and Library B (the dirty stinking furry porn), and the thumbs/settings are getting all screwed up, do this:

1. Clone Library B to a new Library and call it B-Temp.  Put it in a new location somewhere.
2. Switch to it and make it the active library (if it isn't already).
3. Delete the original Library B.  You can also delete the original library files off of disk if you want (MC doesn't do this for you, so you have to track them down in Windows Explorer and trash them).
4. Rename Library B-Temp to Library B.  If you really, really want it back where it was originally, you can instead clone it back from Library B-Temp back to Library B (and put it back in its original location, but make sure to delete the stuff that's there first).  Because I'm paranoid, if I was doing this, I'd make sure to close out of MC completely and re-open before starting.  This is probably unnecessary.
5. Enjoy, now you have two libraries with separate IDs.  Don't mess it up again.

PS.  If you directly access Library B on other copies of MC (not via the library server, but by loading the library directly), you'll also need to delete the Library out of those copies of MC and re-add it once you're done with the above steps.
