Media player 17
« on: May 29, 2012, 11:01:41 pm »

Hi to all,I assume this forum is also the support area/if not I apologise.Anyway I have just purchased a ASRock Vision 3D 252B,and intend to use it a HTPC/I have been down the media player path for years and I am so tired of the we will fix it with firmware.

So here I am venturing on the HTPC trip,I was going to use XBMC /and was reading a review on the Anandtech website and they mentioned software called Media Player 17.And I thought OK! I will take a look at that

and OH! Boy am I glad I did, this is just the most stunning piece of software I have come across, and I can see the people involved have worked very!! very!! HARD to arrive at this point.
So I would like to ask a few questions before I consider making a purchase.

1 I would like to be able to import a folder into Media Player 17/and have it stay intact with it's original icon and the contents inside that folder displayed in MC17/ only I open it/and example would be a full season of  TV Series. It looks messy all jumbled together/can also create a new section and call it say TV Shows/say under types tab or where ever

2 I noticed that with in the MC17 I can not right click on a file and rename it/I would like to be able to do this and for it to change in the original folder also/is this possible

Thank you Wayne    (MC17 a brilliant solution / a Media Player that works)

I think you should give this forum more than 3 hours to give you a reply. Also consider what hour it is in the US, where most forummembers and moderators lives.

1. If you associate filetypes with MC they will change icons accordingly in windows explorer. You can import files without having MC associated to them.
'can also create a new section and call it say TV Shows/say under types tab or where ever' < This I don't understand.

2. Rightclick file and you should have an option to rename, also under 'Library tools' there is a powerful tool called 'Rename, Move & Copy files'. You can also try clicking the file and hitting F2. Same as rightclick > Rename. Renaming in MC will also rename the file in windows.

File is renamed only if edited field is some of the filename/path related fields otherwise only database/tag is updated

Welcome.

For #1, I think you'll want to create a view.  Standard View views are created in the tree (right-click), and Theater View views are created in Options > Theater View > Items to Show.

You might play around a little, and then post back with specific view questions if you have any.

The reason you feel it's a bit messy might be because MC have gotten some meta data wrong? Use standard view with panes (media sub type, tv show and season is good). Then you can check that every TV Show and Movie are tagged correctly and are placed together. If something fails consistently it would be good to give the file names here, and it's possible that the automatic lookup system can be adapted. After you have made sure they are tagged correctly, you'll want to test out some view. You can create your own, or use the default. Also make sure you test out Theater View, which is my favorite (ctrl + 4). you can also change and add these views as you please.

As for keeping the content of your directories intact and use that data, you might want to ensure that you import the data without the automatic lookup enabled. And then see if MC detects your images and such on it's own. If it does not, there are probably some differences in the accepted name and placement of the files you want. MC will however give you most of the art work and meta data if you use the automatic meta data scraping system, but it's up to use if you want to use it or not.

Also have in mind that this program often takes a bit of time getting used to. But once you know how it can be done, you can almost do anything. Have a good look at all the options and then try to create some views in standard view and theater view would be my suggestion.

And by the way. It's called Media Center 17. Not Player ;)
