editing tags and different libraries
« on: June 04, 2012, 05:20:18 am »

I have been editing some tags recently of AIFF files, 'Album' among other things, trying to streamline album names of classical CDs.

Much to my surprise, when I imported the edited files into another library at least some of the edits were missing.

What is going on here?

How do I edit tags, 'Album' and others, so that the changes will migrate from library to library?

You have to have an auto import rule which has enabled the "Update on external changes" I believe. Without it, you'll probably have to do the same work on all libraries. It's also worth mentioning the Library server. That way you can have one library, shared to all clients. The changes will be synced to all if you choose to.

MrHaugen and Vincent,

Thanks for your quick replies.

I will doublecheck the settings that both of you suggested, I believe they should all be in their default positions for JMRC17.

But assuming I fix these, shall I be able to edit tags in one library and then import files with all the edits into another?

Or is it safer to change formats to FLAC (or smth else uncompressed)?

Or live with just one library (at the moment, my least preferred option)?

I do not know the details of AIFF. IF writing tags are supported to the files, then yes. You should be able to share the data with other libraries with imports or auto imports and the "update on external changes" option. If the format does not support it however... I have no idea.

As far as I know, the WAV/AIFF tag plugin is “off” by default.
If so, activate it.
Select all AIFF and do a “Update Tags from Library” to force the writing of all the tags to AIFF.
JRiver uses a special way to tag both WAV and AIFF.
Portability with other applications might be poor.

I do prefer FLAC due to its wide support and its excellent tagging options.
But if you use OSX/iTunes you might run into trouble as FLAC is not supported by iTunes (or WIN/WMP).
