Slow CD ripping

I recently upgraded to MC 16.0.181 after getting a new computer and not being able to use my old version 10 with Windows 7 (something about privileges).

Anyways, the problem: it seems any CD that I try to rip takes ages to complete.  Like more than 15 minutes for a 60-minute CD.  Indeed, the rip speed doesn't ever get above 3.0x.  And my drive makes weird noises, like it's having respiratory difficulty after complications of pneumonia.  And yet it has no issue burning CDs--that goes by at a quick pace.  This is a brand (two-and-a-half weeks old) new Dell laptop, so I don't think it's something with the drive.  Any thoughts?

How did you manage to upgrade to 16.0.181?  It hasn't been sold since last September.

If you haven't purchased yet, please try MC17.

10 was a long time ago so I don't know if the Secure rip feature was available but it greatly slows rip speed.
Go to tools/options/CD,DVD & BD/CD Ripping and set the Copy mode to Normal then test to see if you get the speeds you are accustom to.

Copy mode:

Secure: This is the default mode and will give the most reliable rips. It does multiple read passes to ensure the extracted data is correct. It will generally be half the speed of other methods and possibly much slower than that if the media is damaged or the computer is very busy doing other tasks.

Normal: This is the fastest mode - use it if you need faster rip time than secure mode and are confident your discs will read accurately without secure mode.

Analog: If none of the digital modes work for you, you may have a very old CD-ROM drive that is not capable of digital ripping. In this case you can choose analog mode and set the recording volume as described below. This is the slowest ripping method and will take the same amount of time to rip a track as it would to play it. Note that analog ripping only works if your CD-ROM drive is connected to your sound card. If you can listen to audio CDs on your computer then analog ripping should work.

I don't remember exactly how I upgraded, but that's the version that comes up when I click "About Media Center..."  And I did already purchase.
