Theater View
« on: June 14, 2012, 12:35:07 pm »

I love JRiver very cool program the BEST for audio, however it's really lacking in "Theatre View" mode. XBMC looks very pretty compared to JRiver in that mode. I know XBMC isn't close to the awesome features and audio playback JRiver has to offer but with JRiver being such a kick *ss program can't we get some nice skins and/or a better menu layout for theatre. Right now I use JRiver for my audio playback and XBMC for my TV Shows and Movies, I would like to use JRiver for Audio, TV shows, & Movies. If I'm missing something in theater view please do tell. I would like to see JRiver have more options for Theatre Mode.

You realize you're kicking a can of worms around right? ;)

Browse the skins subforum for some really nice skins, especially xplain's.

Take a look at the Options for Theater View and at the Themes there.

If I had a cent for every time someone mentions this I'd be a rich man. If Jim got $49 for every time this wish was fulfilled he'd be a very rich man! Maybe it is time to open out the skinning engine completely? If only to keep the forum from anymore XBMC comments!

There is nothing wrong with asking for more skins. After all, we did pay for the program, and the program has the capability for skins. Granted, the programs are for US to make, but let's be honest, it's not the most intuitive program to use. Wanting eye candy, as well as performance, is not something to be scoffed off as something "you" don't need, want, or like. Many paid customers do want this, and being paid customers they have every right to ask for a new skin as anyone else here has a right to ask for SACD audio support, or Carnac support, or custom views support. Being that there are so many people wanting new sknis, or at least an easier way/support to make new skins, it should obviously raise the attention of the developers to apply some work in this area. Like you said, "if you had a cent for every time someone asked for...". It's obviously something many people want, and they should'nt be left out in the cold like the red-headed stepchild while other's get all the support that is asked. C'mon Matt, Jim, show some support in this area. I can tell by your responses, or lack of, that you guys aren't very enthusiastic about supporting this area, but it is an area in JRiver that a huge majority of your paying customers are wanting support in. IMO, I think you have the audio/performance issue nailed in JRiver. Time to spread some of the love to give it a nice face-lift.

Just my 2 cents. With all due respect.

...

We would have about $2.

We have a long list of our own and this one is not near the top.  Sorry.

If you want skins, please consider making them.  I don't think many people have explored what's already there.  Themes, for example.

I can tell by your responses, or lack of, that you guys aren't very enthusiastic about supporting this area, but it is an area in JRiver that a huge majority of your paying customers are wanting support in.

I don't know about 'huge', but it may very well be a majority of users who feel this way. Whatever the numbers, the lack of enthusiasm you're referring to surely can't be a blatant disregard for what so many customers want. It seems more likely it has to do with the impossibility of satisfying the unreasonable expectations these users have.

This matter has been beaten to death—most recently in Eye Candy. Some can't seem to understand or accept that MC can't be just like XBMC (or whatever) without, well, becoming XBMC. Theatre View is already far more advanced than XBMC, and adding or modifying visual elements via skinning while respecting it's completely flexible design just isn't feasible.

I don't mean to suggest that all of these users just want MC to be like XBMC. Some do appreciate the abilities of Theatre View, and would like some additional features to make it more visually appealing. But it's very clear most of these users have not even considered what Theatre View can already do. The message is, "I don't want to have to configure anything, I just want it to be like XMBC." The only rational response to this, "You're beyond our ability to support you. Use XBMC, if that's what you prefer." If you're running a business, of course, you don't say such things to customers.

So why not give them what they want—a 'Theatre View for Dummies' that looks just like XBMC? Because then there would be even more complaining that, while TVD is very pretty, it won't display custom fields wherever desired, allow menus to configured to suit the user's circumstances, etc., etc. It's a shame such a thing could not be created easily. It would be an excellent demonstration that what many ask for is not really what they want.

In the aftermath of the unproductive Eye Candy discussion, I posted Proposal: Logos in Theatre View's Info Panels. Although I like the idea, my main purpose was to demonstrate how we might suggest specific, feasible features for Theatre View that might be used to improve it's visual appeal. Other than a handful of positive comments from experienced users who seem to appreciate the implications, it hasn't received much popular support.

My conclusion is developers really are on there own in such circumstances. If many users are going to demand the impossible while ignoring the feasible (not to mention many capabilities that already exist), maybe this is best ignored. Showing any enthusiasm for the phenomenon certainly won't help. The best strategy may be to conserve your energy for the day you've decided, using your own best judgment, to take a gamble and introduce a new feature you hope will be worth the development effort to create it.

I believe the first priority for Theatre View development should be on making the configuration system more powerful and easier to use. Many suggestions on how to do that have been made. Progress on that front will make Theatre View's potential more accessible, and hopefully increase appreciation of it's fundamental design. Then users will be more likely to demand features that are both useful and feasible. But that's just my opinion. If it's ignored, I'm not going to assume it's because JRiver is bent on ignoring what a huge majority of their customers want.

@Jimmy:   Well said!  (excluding maybe the red haired step kid part .. lol)

@ Rick (and the JRiver gang:)     :  - The issue is simply visual appeal.  We all love what JRIver can do.. and that is : No Compromise HQ audio Video reproduction.. And a bunch of very advanced, and technical, and slick abilities.   What else could you want??

(You tell'm Jimmy!  Before that can of worms gets chucked my way)

Visual appeal.

You Engineers are doing an amazing Job!   ,,, Its time Theatre View gets the touch of an artist.

- I Just wanted to add:

 thankyou  JRiver (and gang)

I believe the first priority for Theatre View development should be on making the configuration system more powerful and easier to use.

This is a great idea. I also believe that the JRiver crew need not be involved in this area. What I believe is needed is a way encourage the community to make their own skins and share them here for the rest. This has already begun by the "only" contributer so far - Xplain. I wish him the best of luck and offer him all my help to try to get an organized area here in the community to discuss and recommend new themes. What I find, though, is that instead of encouraging someone and pointing them in the right direction (thread?), instead they are met with a cold "STOP, you're asking too much, this isin't XBMC, don't bite the hand that feeds you, etc...". While I don't want to see MC turned into anything near resembling XBMC, I do want some more appropriate themes - themes that are uniquely MC. I think an appropriate sticky'd thread about "Post your Theater View skins here" would help kick this new project into gear.

Make sure you use the new lists styles added in v17.

There are sample screenshots of the default Theater View skin here:

@ Rick (and the JRiver gang:)     :  - The issue is simply visual appeal...

Please don't suggest those wanting more 'visual appeal' are being ignored by those preoccupied by other capabilities. I'm trying to point out why begging for something as vague 'eye candy' and 'like XMBC' is useless. Feasible improvements have to specified within the context of the existing Theatre View system. That's not to suggest the system itself can never be changed or improved, but anything that could only be relevant or possible in the context of it's wholesale change is a non-starter.

Those serious about improving the visual appeal of Theatre View will make specific suggestions for changes believed feasible (as users, we can never know definitely what is feasible; common sense will tell us much of what is not). "It's visual appeal, Stupid" doesn't help.

What I find, though, is that instead of encouraging someone and pointing them in the right direction (thread?), instead they are met with a cold "STOP, you're asking too much, this isin't XBMC, don't bite the hand that feeds you, etc...".

I hope you're not finding that in my comments. I've already suggested a more constructive approach for those who want more visual appeal would be to support the efforts of those like xplain. Discussing needs and wants with him and others interested in skinning is likely to identify feasible improvements to the skinning system that make some of those things possible.

Really???

Can I suggest this PLEASE be locked? I don't think anyone needs yet another "We want MC to look like XBMC" thread when there have been at least three or four of the very same thing only recently...
