MC won't rename your files.

You could save a backup from MC16 and restore it in MC17.  MC16 made automatic backups.

i have been trying that and it fails, lost more files when i tried that, even more messed up. All the files are on the external drive, so how do i get them back please.  it all worked great before , even 16 does not work, same mess, some files are duplicated in wrong directories its a mess, cover art gone etc.

Make sure you're using a regular install and not a portable install.

You could uninstall and reinstall v17 to be sure.

Thanks for the upgrade.  Is it working for you now?

You can 'Standard' vs 'Portable' install on the second screen of the install.  Make sure you've selected 'Standard'.

no its not, its lost some of my albums and art etc, the files are there but now most of albums have lost there identity for name, artist etc so they all end up as an unassigned album, this is a real pain, so how do i fix it?

Hopefully this helps:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Upgrade_to_MC17#Converting_Old_Libraries
i uninstalled 17 and am fixing 16 trying to get it back to where it was before a second attempt, since everything was messed up in 16 as well,  i restored a backup library from the auto backup,  lost a lot of the tags ( deleted them) changed file directories, lost cover art, duplicated tracks in albums, duplicated albums that lost tags,  messed up, so i am manually fixing things and getting it organized again as all the music filet are there, make a back up and then try again

Since MC won't rename your files, then your external drive letter must have changed (Did you get a new thumb drive, install a new hard drive, connect a new external drive?). You need to make it static in Windows disk management. Just set it back to the original letter assignment and you should be fine.
