Trouble Moving Files
« on: June 26, 2012, 09:19:08 pm »

Hello:

I need a little help please. I’m having trouble moving files within MC17. Or more accurately, I am able to move them but somehow they are not being shown in their new locations from any of my Library views.

Specifics:
1)... These are audio files (FLAC) and their associated cover art.
2)... My procedure: I access the files from within MC17 by going to the “Drives & Devices” tab, then drill down to the folder or file I wish to move. I have tried both “drag and drop” and right-click>Library Tools>Rename, Move and Copy Files …. This works fine (the files appear to be relocated correctly). The problem is they continue to be shown in all of my views as if they never were moved. Do I need to “Sync” these changes somehow?
3)... Windows 7
4)... MC 17.0.173

I’m sure there is something pretty basic that I’m missing. I’ve looked through the Wiki and User’s guide but can’t find anything to solve this problem. Although I’ve used MC for a few years (and like it), I’ve never attempted to move files before. Ugh.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you explain what you mean by this? Any view includes files according to it's Rules for file display. Unless those include one or more based on location, moving files will have no affect on what is shown in the view.

Thanks for your reply Rick. I'll try to better explain my problem.

I am a classical music lover. I have been using MC for several years but use it only for my audio files, almost exclusively for managing and editing metadata, etc. I use another program (dBpoweramp) for ripping (all FLAC) and play my music on my stereo system through a Squeezebox Touch device. My collection of classical discs now stands at 975 CDs, so I have a fair amount of data and many files.

My most useful Library Views include the fields "Artist", "Genre" and "Album." For me, I use the Album field to describe the work. On rare occasion, I would like to re-define a work (Album) such that I now have, say, two albums comprised of the individual music files that had been previously included in a single album. I can easily accomplish this through one of the two procedures described in my first post. The problem is that when I try to view them (or play them) from my Library View, the changes I have made do now show up. It's as if I never split the single album from one album to two.

I hope I better explained the situation.

Thanks again for offering help,

Dave

I am curious why do you not just use one of the standard audio views to move items? I realize that drag and drop won't work in a normal audio view for moving
files but by using the Rename, Copy, & Move function you can easily move files around. I don't know how well R C & M works when using the Explorer folder in
MC but I have never had a problem when using it from a normal view whether it be Audio, Video, etc.
I can maybe see using *Explorer* for import but even that is not as simple as a normal import since it is as simple as Alt+F L I and then select the file types to
import and type the location, D:\Music\flac for example.

I don't mean any disrespect by questioning your methods I just want to try and understand the possible benefit of doing it that way.

I don't know how Squeezebox works, but I suppose you need to move the files to separate folders for it to recognize them as belonging to separate albums. In MC views, however, they'll continue to be grouped according to the value of the [Album] field. If you were playing the files only in MC, it would not be necessary to move files to split an album. You could do so simply by changing [Album].

In order for these changes to work in the MC17 views, you will need to rename your compilation Albums.  Just moving the location of the files won't have any impact, as has already been mentioned.  MC will sort the tracks against the Album field name.

I don't know how Squeezebox works either.  It is probably based on Folder and Track names but could work on Tags.  If you have moved your tracks to new Album folders for your new compilation, presumably, if Squeezebox works on this data, that should be OK.  If it works on Tags, you could try the Library function, Update Tags from Library.

Nick and Rick - Thanks very much for your responses. With your nudging I now understand that Views in MC are "tag based" (if I can describe it that way). I've now also looked further into the software that drives the Squeezebox devices and find that it is too. I had incorrectly assumed that it was "folder based." Since I have rarely needed to change my album definition, I never realized this.

Thanks again. I'm sure this seems very elementary to you but has helped me a lot.

Hi Dave, that's good news.

With your nudging I now understand that Views in MC are "tag based" (if I can describe it that way).

A subtle but important distinction here is that MC works on field values in its library.  The tags are stored in the music file.  MC allows sync of these in either direction.  Your Squeezebox needs you to update tags from library in order to see your changes in MC.
