J River feedback and suggestions
« on: July 07, 2012, 10:59:23 am »

First thing, a few comments about support, and then I'll continue on about the software.

For $50 one would expect real support and forums.  Not only just forums, I think only forum support would be justified in a lower cost program or open source and it may work well but not everyone that buys the software will be comfortable with the idea of their sole support coming from a user forum.  Just saying, please don't hate on me.  I actually do mean it to be constructive since a lot of people probably choose not to buy on this one issue.  The thing is, there is no way for you to know how many customers you are turning away, could only be a few, could be many, certainly some.  You should at least do some bean counting.

Also, there should be a feature suggestion board - specifically set aside for just feature suggestions.  This way they are all in one place, can be voted on, can be prioritized (publicly) and can be commented on.  Also, you're less likely to get repeated feature requests if they are all in on place.

As for Media Center, I really like the software but mostly only care about the library management capabilities and tagging features.  In my opinion, the software is way overpriced.  I think 29.99 would be better but 19.99 or maybe even 24.99 would be the sweet spot.  Alternatively, if you can't bring yourself to lower the price, you should make a light version(s).  For example, my use-case is almost entirely library management and tagging of music, I don't think that during my entire trial I ever purposely played audio for anything other than testing and I certainly never played video.  I like the library management features and specifically the audio analysis but I can't justify $50 for that alone.

I have a wealth of options for playing music and video.  Squeezebox Server and XBMC fulfill all of my media needs so I find many Media Center features superfluous.  Worse, they tend to get in the way of how I use the software.  What options are available for customers like me?

Maybe you should consider releasing a tagging-only version of Media Center.  I don't think it would cost much to produce since you already have everything you need. Just strip down all the features from Media Center except the library management/tagging capabilities and there you have it.
