Internet radio URLs
« on: July 08, 2012, 07:12:10 am »

Please forgive what may well be an awfully basic question, but they are sometimes the tough ones!

How do I store a working URL - in this instance?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r2_aaclca.pls

If I use the URL directly from the File/Open URL menu, all's well.

Now it appears that when you open the above URL, the servers translate into some kind of token and the stream you end up playing is typically something like this:

http://bbcmedia.ic.llnwd.net/stream/bbcmedia_lc1_radio2_p?s=1341741356&e=1341755756&h=534665b829ee64e2b61eace4439b75b0

...which is what you store when you right-click and "send to playlist". Trouble is, that token based stream is only valid for the current session and cannot be reused, certainly not after an hour or two.

If I edit the playlist URL back into the human-friendly form, I get the message "something went wrong with playback".

Hence my simple question - where and how can I save the human-friendly URL -
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r2_aaclca.pls for re-use, other than relying on the File/Open URL MRU list?

Thanks!

Have you tried the Connected Media option?

Click Audio, at the bottom should be Connected Media. Right-Click it and choose Add Website, then enter your URL there.

No, I hadn't, but it seems to work  :D

So many facilities, so little time.

Many thanks!

Supplementary question:

Is it possible to bypass the dialog that ensues when using the links in "connected media" when MC is first run? Selecting "keep using this answer" only applies to the current session, it doesn't get remembered for the NEXT time you run Media Center (which might be a bug).

You can also add the resulting 'Playing Now's files to a playlist and access them via that. Makes them a bit easier to access form theater view.

Thank you, but I have zero interest in visualizations.

Unless I'm doing something wrong, that adds the unique tokenized human-unfriendly URL that doesn't remain viable for long.

Thanks for the links.  There seems to be no way to add Connected Media to Navigation toolbar for easy access?

Not directly I believe, but you can use "Navigation" on the toolbar which stores and accesses your 'Favorites'

Navigate to the branch on the tree you want to bookmark then click on the Navigation icon on the toolbar and select 'Add to Favorites'

viola!

EDIT: Actually I was incorrect, "Connected Media" has been added to the available choices for Toolbar Icons.
so yes, you can either way

Another added bonus when using those mms links is that they can timeshift... press pause and the stream continues recording in the background, and when you press play, you don't miss anything....

Unbeatable for when listening to things such as radio plays.

Here's an old thread of mine with an attached mpl playlist that includes working links for all seven BBC radio channels... "BBC Radio Streams - 1 - 7 all working."

I've just reminded myself of the reason I prefer the AAC streams. Radio 3 at 320kb/s. Probably the best online radio quality, anywhere. It certainly sounds nicer than the WMA feed.
