playing episodes from blu-ray disc
« on: July 18, 2012, 07:19:54 am »

Hi

I'm fairly new to MC.  I have the basics sorted but I'm having a couple of issues that I think are down to my lack of knowledge.  I'm running MC17 latest stable release.

I've checked the Wiki and forum search but so far can't find a answer to the following problems:

1) Removing the OSD when playing back video within Theatre view.

The menu options at the top and info bar at the bottom remain visible with the video sandwiched in between rather than full screen.  Display view acts the way I want with the controls only visible when the mouse is positioned over them.  However, I want the theatre view control options for my large screen TV.

2) Playing episodes from a blu-ray disk or rip.

When playing a tv series directly from disc there only appears to be one episode.  I can't find the "play / episode select" screen and pressing "next" at the end of the first episode does nothing.

If I rip the disc then import in to MC I have the same issue. I can see the various stream files (on my HDD outside MC) but can't work out which order they should be in (it doesn't appear to be file name / number order).  Again there seems to be no way to select the episodes from within MC or "play all".

Any guidance on the above would be much appreciated.
Thanks

1. That's the way the Theater View Playing Now display is supposed to act. Unfortunately the controls, volume, timer slider etc don't hide in Theater View, only Display View as you have noted.

2. cannot answer re Blu Ray as I have no experience with it.

...re Bluray :

Unfortnately there is no full menu support with BD's. Only commercial BD players such as Cyberlink PDVD12/Arcsoft TMT5 support it. If full menu support is wished from within MC you will have to configure MC17 to use such an external player.

The best you'll get without it are a listing of individual chapters and titles (structure) but this definitly doesn't help much. There are several discussions on the forum re BD full menu support.

I haven't given up hope myself that full menu support will come sometimes down the road to MC.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I'll be looking to implement a 3rd party player as I want to have a 3d capability so I guess that will resolve the menu support as well.

As for the Theatre view issue: I'm quite surprised that is the way it is designed to work.  I thought the view was specifically for large screen / non mouse use i.e. big TVs.  Who wants to watch a film with the menu items still displayed?  Would anyone else like to see this changed?

As for now is there any way of starting video or image playback in display mode from the Theatre view?  I don't mind the OSD for audio playback.

Thanks again.

Look at: Options/Theater view/Behavior/"Jump on play (video)".

Note: even in display view you can bring up an OSD using the up/down arrow keys.

You can also switch between views by using CTRL + 1-5.

Ctrl + 1 = Standard View
Ctrl + 2 = Mini View
Ctrl + 3 = Display View
Ctrl + 4 = Theater View
Ctrl + 5 = Cover View

My preference is to rip the episodes to .mkv files.  Read the instructions on the wiki on TV_Shows_Seasons, Series and Episodes

The Options/Theater view/Behavior/"Jump on play (video)" helps - thanks

As for the episodes I'll try and resolve these with a 3rd party player.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Not really sure what you mean by this?  In Theater view, I see no controls during video playback until I either use the up/down arrow key or take the mouse to the top of the screen.  Even then they pop up over the playing video - they don't sandwich it.

You are in Display View, then, and not Theater View. When launching a video, Theater View can automatically switch to Display View. However, you can also watch a video in Theater View and then the video is sandwiched between the menus at the top and the volume/position bars at the bottom.

The default behavior on all of my machines (with no special configuration) is the way I described.  The only way I could get it to display the way the OP describes is to stop play back and navigate to and switch to playing now in theater view.  When you say it 'can' switch to Display View, under what circumstances does it not?  I have two systems that run MC only in theater view and have never seen it do anything other than start videos in full screen.

Edit:  To be clear I am not saying you are wrong or am trying to be argumentative - just trying to understand why the default behavior I am seeing is different than the default behavior being described.

I've explained the setting that controls this above. I can't remember what the default was when I installed MC.

BartMan01  - I'd like to explore this if you do have a set up in theatre view as described.  Any chance you could post a list of the settings you have under Options / Theatre view?

As I said before the "jump to play" helps but the controls are not idea for "sofa" viewing without a mouse and it doesn't revert back to theatre view when the video playback is stopped.

Waddy, maybe you can explain what you mean when you say "controls are not ideal", then we may be able to give specific assistance. And, for sure, it should revert to the view you launched the video from when you press stop. What are you seeing?

My 'Jump on play (video)' setting is the default of 'Display View' (now I understand some of the above comments :)).  When I start a video, it plays full screen.  When I stop a video it goes back to theater view.

In Display view the controls are more orientated to mouse control.  I thought the idea of theatre view (in general not just MC) was aimed at large screens that generally did not have mouse control but standard remotes with left/right/up/down type controls.

The controls in theatre view work well but the problem is the "sandwiched" video.  Display view resolves the video problem but introduces a control issue.

But your remote will have transport controls so you don't need to use the ones at the top of the screen.

Yes, Waddy, I don't understand what you mean here. Unless you pick up and move your mouse you will never see the, admittedly somewhat old-school, pop-up control panel.

Your remote replicates the play/pause/ffw/rew/stop controls and if you press up or down arrow an on screen display (different to the mouse-friendly control panel) appears at the bottom which you can use together with the left and right arrow keys to change subtitles/audio and many other things. Everything you need can be done either with the your remote's player control keys or its arrow keys.

So now I feel a bit dumb!  I never tried that.  I assumed the controls that became visible when I moved the mouse we the only ones available!

I also discovered the stacks / advance / auto create BD/DVD title particles on another post which helps with the BD episodes issue.  It's another few manual steps but at least I can access the episodes and get rid of the rest of the clutter.

This is a bit off topic (lets see what happens): but I also read that MC can play side by side (or above & below) blu rays so long as they are ripped to disk without encryption.  The TV then handles 3D.  So if that's correct I shouldn't need a 3rd party software player either?

Thanks for helping.
