What do you listen to most often [feedback wanted]
« on: August 01, 2012, 09:29:07 am »

We're hoping to have Play Doctor make some suggestions for things you might enjoy listening to.

Imagine a car radio with a few buttons for stations (image taken from Jim's car):

To do this, we're wondering what you listen to most often?

I'll start:
1) One of the last few albums I've purchased / ripped
2) A shuffled genre (often 'Easy Listening' for background music)
3) A Play Doctor playlist seeded with an artist that sounds good (ie. 'George Winston' for easy listening, 'Duke' for jazz, etc.)
4) Some song (or songs) I'm addicted to at the moment, often on repeat

That radio looks like a Blaupunkt from the '60's. The band frequencies are in German:

L = Langwelle (long wave)
M = Mittelwelle (medium wave)
K = Kurzwelle (short wave)
U = Ultrakurzwelle (ultra short wave) FM
U = Second preset FM

I listen to the following:

1.  Albums I've recently added to the library
2.  My favorite songs
3.  Albums I've added to the library, but never listened to

I probably should starting rating my songs, but I enjoy browsing through the albums, looking at the cover art or artist art, picking an artist, viewing the albums, and finally picking the song and adding it to playing now. I might select 5-8 songs for a listening session which is inevitably interrupted by the wife, kids, or pets.

I used to listen to all that kind of stuff described previously in this thread, but now...

Exclusively EPIC DEATH-METAL.

ProTip: FF to the ~1:30 mark in that video.  Hilarity ensues.

Glynor, a ProTip for you: that's EPIC DOOM-METAL right thar....  ;D

1) New Albums
2) Old Albums
This constitutes >90% of my listening. I often queue up a few albums if I'll be listening for a while. The remainder is mostly...
3) Shuffle list based mostly on genre, but sometimes other random tags that I've shoved into my music.

Oh, you're right of course. Oh well.  It was still funny.  ;D

For seriousness, I don't really have much to add to what others said.  I have some super-fancy smart playlists that use the ~mix feature, but I have that all sorted.

Mostly, I pick specific albums/songs and build custom on-the-fly playlists or I use Play Doctor.
Less often I use one of my special Smartlists or Smartlist-like views (based on rating, last played, genres, and stuff like that).
My wife mostly picks a Genre and plays on shuffle.  Sometimes she makes custom playlists too, or uses the Smartlists.

Actually while off topic for Playdoctor you are closer to the mark than intended....for me and the family it is "Radio" and currently MC is not the source (it is either the Intercom, Car, Webbrowser on the PC, or Tune-In on Android).  Couple of areas for consideration:
HW Tuner Support:  I've seen a few threads on asking about support for Radio Tuners / DVB-T Radio Station Support (they tune but don't play with a stalled blank video screen)
Client Access and Channel Selection:  You can of course use Std View to create links under "Connected Media" you know about but there is no scanning option (aka Tune In Radio) and no support for this from either TheaterView or Gizmo so client use is pretty limited in our environment.  Connected Media seems like a bit of an afterthought more than an integrated approach to Radio (or other streaming media).

Whatever choices you come up with, none of them are likely to be exactly what I want. I'd much prefer they were all smartlists I could set to my own liking. To make full use of PD's capabilities, I suppose there would need to be a way to specify how the list is to be used (i.e., [Prescription Type] = Seed, Select from, etc.). You could still provide stock defaults (and a 'reset to default' function), but then users would be able to modify the smartlists or replace them with their own.

Usually depends on what I'm doing.  I will listen to a list of my favorite "Jumpy Blues and Rock" when doing manual things, (Working on car, wood working, ect...) and more mellow favorites when typing reports and such.  On that note, usually my favorites are the most recently ripped that I haven't played into the ground yet.

The best thing about the radio is hearing songs you've never heard before that you like (it's a rarity now-a-days). If Play Doctor could identify songs in my library that I might like based off similarity scores--a la Pandora or last.fm--that would be insanely awesome. I'm not sure I would want online content incorporated into the mix, because it tends to be a lot lower quality than my local stuff and it sort of ruins the "flow."

Almost all of my listening is by album. Even if I queue up multiple albums, I listen to an entire album before going to the next.

1. One of my many playlists, almost always in random order.  The playlists are by type of music
2. By genre, in random order.
3. Classical playlists in track order (if I remember to turn off shuffle)

Music is either played from computer or most often from ipod hifi scattered at work or at home, each with an Ipod synched from MC or if later generation, synced through MCiS

I rarely use a playlist or use shuffle at all.  (Never used Play Doctor.) My wife might like these modes of use.

I often start browsing with a classical work in mind.  What I see as I browse (in a panes view) often suggests a new idea ans I follow that idea.  Sometimes, I follow a theme like same composer, same artist or same type of work (Chopin mazurkas for example) for several seelctions.  Mostr importantly for classical works, I play all the movements in the order intended.

The last 25 songs I have recently favorited, starting from either 0 stars or less than 3 stars.

For me, one button would be 4s and 5s recently played.  Another button might be "recently imported".  Another might be "favorite artist" (by rated songs), playing unrated songs.  And I definitely would have at leat one user-configurable button.

I like this, and it doesn't even have to have the decade feature.

Yeah, that's what I meant too, actually: the decade feature isn't necessary

One for albums from the past year ,years.  One for Beats Per Minute that would be setable- I find that one very good for me - used for picking mood - surprising sometime. Classical, and random with some exceptions e.g. Christmas, Opera etc.

Beats Per Minute?  I tried just last week to help a young friend pick some music for his wedding reception, and tempo was the big problem.  Everything I chose was either too fast or too slow, although maybe he was just too fussy....   Anyway, a Beats Per Minute feature would have helped to easily narrow things down.

I like listening to songs I've not heard for a while. Of course, if they're new and rated high (I use my personal rate field from 1-10) I'm fine with listening to them a few times, but with every play the probability of listening to the track should reduce.

What I think would be great is a kind of "play frequency rate" that not only considers the last play date but the whole history of a song being played. A song being played last week, 1 year ago and 5 years ago should be rated higher than a song being played 3 times during the last few weeks - considering the same star rate. In theory with formulas it's already possible to create something similar except that play history is not available.

The main reason to have a more sophisticated "play frequency rate" is to prevent a nice new song not being played for years after having listened to it once.

Does this make sense?

1) One of the last few albums I've purchased / ripped
2) A shuffled genre (often 'Easy Listening' for background music)
3) A Play Doctor playlist seeded with an artist that sounds good (ie. 'George Winston' for easy listening, 'Duke' for jazz, etc.)
4) Some song (or songs) I'm addicted to at the moment, often on repeat

I usually want a dynamic playlist (#3) built off of #1.

I'm totally artist/album oriented.  I have never used MC for video... I don't watch video...

I generally listen to all I have by an artist, select artist, add to playing now.

I never ever do random.

Being artist/album oriented... that is why I've requested MC17.exe (MC18.exe) commands for:

advance to next artist
advance to next album

I mostly use MC for listening to music.
Before PlayDoctor was available I used Smartlists for all kind of selections. Mostly genre or a mix of genres and then selected two hours of music. I also select by BPM to only listen to more slow music e.g: slow and smooth jazz.

I now have switched to PlayDoctor and use it the same way like I used smartlists before. The advantage it plays longer and updates automatically when at the end.

Below is a screen shot of the PlayDoctor playlists and an example of a setting for "slow jazz smooth"

If Play Doctor has the option to treat Albums as the smallest unit, then I'm happy... i.e. This album (complete), then that album(complete), ...

This is how I prefer to listen to classical.
