There have been many requests over the years for the ability to automatically select/change DSP settings based on a sources number of channels, media subtype, etc. Zones currently allow us to have different settings and we can switch zones depending on what we are playing. However, this is still cumbersome and not really usable for others in the family or for visitors.
in the Custom Video Mode we can currently apply rules based on conditions. These rules include type of splitter/decoder/renderer and filter. If the rules also included zones it would be a very powerful addition to JRiver. This would allow us to specify a zone based on a condition. We could have one zone selected for 5.1 content and one zone for 7.1 content. Or we could have a zone for 5.1 content with media subtype of music, another zone for 5.1 content with media subtype of movie, and another zone for all other content.
To make this work well, audio only sources would need to be included in the Custom Video Mode. We actually can do this now by going to Options > File Types > Playback Method and selecting "JRiver Video Engine (using DirectShow filters)" for an Audio file type. By the way, "JRiver" should be changed to "JRiver."
We would also need to be able to clone zones. It currently takes forever to setup a new zone when one has to remember to change to internal audio, and setup all the DSP settings. This is especially tedious when reentering all the PEQ filters and Room Correction distance\level\crossover settings.
