Mystery: No TV picture with AC adaptor
« on: August 28, 2012, 11:48:56 pm »

Hi

I'm in Australia, trying to use JRiver MC (17.0.184) with an HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook (if relevant, Win 7 x64, 8GB RAM, Radeon HD 5650 graphics) and HP USB DVB-T TV tuner. There's no problem scanning for channels or displaying a picture when running the notebook on battery power. However, as soon as I plug in the AC power adaptor, the picture disappears on all channels, even though there is still sound (the power lead and coax lead are well apart). The adaptor is the one supplied by HP with the notebook. MC17 appears to function normally in all other respects.

There is a TV picture with WMC, using either battery power or the AC adaptor.

Any ideas as to what is wrong would be much appreciated. Thanks.

This is too weird.  I do not know what to suggest.

No worries, and thanks for replying anyway.

I've now come across a fix in the battle.net Diablo III gaming forum, under "ATI MOBILITY & GEFORCE MOBILE: FPS LAG/STUTTERING FIX!'.

In case others using ATI graphics experience this issue with TV using MC17, in ATI Catalyst Control Center just go to Graphics>PowerPlay, and if Enable PowerPlay is checked, change the Plugged In setting to "Maximize Battery Life" from its default "Maximize Performance". Of course, leave the Battery setting at the default "Maximize Battery Life".

Alternatively, simply unchecking PowerPlay also seems to work.

Cheers

An update.

The problem evidently was with my old version of AMD Catalyst. I've just updated to the latest version, 12.8, and the problem goes away. MC17 now displays a TV picture with PowerPlay enabled and the Plugged In setting of "Maximize Performance", which is what you would want of course.

Checking my AMD display driver should have been my first step in sorting out the problem.

So, a storm in a teacup after all.
