I just imported about 40,000 songs, all lossless FLAC and about half of which were hi-rez. It took JRiver about a week to finish analyzing the music, which from what I guess means it determined the playback gain. If I want that information embedded within the tags, do I need to execute an "Update Tags (from Library)" command? I'm trying JRiver out, but if I don't like it, I'd like all the data about the files (including downloaded cover art) to stay embedded within the metadata. Thanks.

If you left default settings alone (to Update Tags), the MC will write this data to the files.  You can verify this for any given file: a) the timestamps on the files will have changed, and b) a Tag Dump will reveal the tags actually in the file.
