File not found - (Synology DSM 4 owners?) [SOLVED]
« on: September 28, 2012, 07:57:55 pm »

I've spent the last three hours on a strange problem.

I have files that play back via Windows Explorer or in MC File browser, but show as File Not Found in any view.

It applies to entire albums.

I have rebooted, re-imported, restarted NAS, tried old MC versions, verified FLAC files, etc.

If I take the filename provided in MC and paste into Windows Explorer, click enter, playback starts in MC, and then the little thumbnails start to build.After a while, I lose the same albums (mp3, flac,etc).

It's affecting maybe 25% of 4TB. I will post more details asap.

Also, I tried pasting in a drive letter which fixes the problem for only a minute before the file reverts to File Not Found! I'm really confused...NAS problem maybe?

Could it be related to these kinds of characters?

I thought that at first Jim, but this problem is really weird. Maybe a corrupt database.

If I take U:\Hersh\Funk, Soul & R&B\Johnny Guitar Watson - 1981 - The very best of\10 - Strong Out - Johnny Guitar Watson - The Very Best Of.mp3
and plug into Windows Explorer, when I hit enter it's played back in MC.

BUT it has file not found in MC. Even if I change it the network address - \\DISKSTATION

I created a new Library using just the mapped drive and please see the screenshots at the end of this post. Files not found in one Library/database, but work fine in another.

Stranger still, in Windows Explorer this is found/opens location:

\\DISKSTATION\JCC-Archives\Hersh\Funk, Soul & R&B\Johnny Guitar Watson - 1981 - The very best of

But this is not:

\\DISKSTATION\JCC-Archives\Hersh\Funk, Soul & R&B\Johnny Guitar Watson - 1981 - The very best of\10 - Strong Out - Johnny Guitar Watson - The Very Best Of (1).mp3

Playback only starts for this file when I use the U:\ location.

Wait Jim, you may be right...sorry!

I renamed the file, and it appears to be working; I see a thumbnail and I can playback via the Network location - but why am I suddenly having this problem?

As you can see, for track 1, I just changed the filename, and did not take out the special characters from the folder name.

Library now has 401765 files. Search and update took 0:10.

Imported 2 new files.
Updated 10 files that had external changes.
Failed to import 1 file.

\\DISKSTATION\JCC-Archives\Jamaican Archive\Eric Monty Morris\45 Rpm Atlantic\Eric Monty Morris - Atlantic (45rpm 7_) - 45 - Oil in My Lamp.flac

...changed to

\\DISKSTATION\JCC-Archives\Jamaican Archive\Eric Monty Morris\45 RPM Atlantic\Eric Monty Morris - Atlantic 45rpm Oil in My Lamp.flac

...is working

I rolled back about 15 versions of MC and tried about 10 libraries going back a month, same issue. Could it be my NAS? I'm not so sure.
Why can I pop this location into Windows Explorer and playback starts in MC, but not from within MC??? (Note the special character "&").

\\DISKSTATION\JCC-Archives\Jamaican Archive\Bob Marley & The Wailers\Marley - Songs Of Freedom\Bob Marley & The Wailers - Songs of Freedom Cd2 - 03 - Trenchtown Rock (Previously Unreleased Alternate Mix).flac

Also tried:

U:\Jamaican Archive\Ebony Sisters, the\45 Rpm Moodisc\Ebony Sisters, the & Mudies All Stars - Moodisc (45rpm 7_) - 45 - Let Me Tell You Boy.flac

...changed to

U:\Jamaican Archive\Ebony Sisters, The\45 RPM Moodisc\Ebony Sisters, the & Mudies All Stars - Moodisc (45rpm) Let Me Tell You Boy.flac

Which worked!

Problem is, I can't see why the Hank Williams files in the screenshots above are a problem - filename length?:

\\DISKSTATION\JCC-Archives\Hersh\Alt-Country, Americana, Country, Folk, Freak Folk\Hank Williams - 1998 - The Complete Hank Williams - Disc 01\06 - My Love For You (Has Turned To Hate) - Hank Williams - The Complete Hank Williams - Disc 01.mp3

*EDIT

Changed to shortened folder name and filename worked:  \\DISKSTATION\JCC-Archives\Hersh\Alt-Country, Americana, Country, Folk, Freak Folk\The Complete Hank Williams CD2\01 - Calling You.Mp3

Just out of curiosity, did you change anything on your Synology NAS recently? Firmware update?

Crap, I did. Went up to 4.0 then 4.1. Maybe I should roll back to 4.

Thanks

I think it may be worth a try. See this thread about Synology problems and upgrading to 4.1.

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=69707.msg506145#msg506145

This is about problems playing VOB files not music, but I guess they could be related. I solved my problem by going back to 4.0

A little nerve-wracking but downgrading back to 4.0 firmware worked!

Here it is thanks to knudsen on the Synology forums:

Quote
This is my "8 step - how to do" manual:
It should be possible to use this procedure on all synology models - just use the correct files...

1) Extract the VERSION file:
First - I extracted the VERSION file from the synology_ixp420_junior_0368.pat file. I am planning to use the synology_ixp420_junior_0385.pat for the actual downgrade, so I use a firmware file which is older than 385 - in this place it is the 368 file. I used WinRAR (ver 3.51) to open the pat-file, which in fact is a TAR copressed archive file. The VERSION file is placed in the root of the TAR archive. I extracted the file to the public share on the synology 101j

2) Enable telnet.
Search this forum, or use this one:
http://oinkzwurgl.org/dl.php?file=syno-telnet-r3.zip
and then telnet to diskstation.

3) Finding files:
DiskStation> cd /
DiskStation> find / -name VERSION
./etc/VERSION
./etc.defaults/VERSION
./volume1/public/VERSION

4) Verify content of file:
DiskStation> more ./etc.defaults/VERSION
majorversion="2"
minorversion="0"
buildphase="3"
buildnumber="0426"
builddate="2006/12/26"

5) Replacing VERSION file:
DiskStation> cp /volume1/public/VERSION /etc.defaults/VERSION

6) Verify content of file after replace:
DiskStation> more ./etc.defaults/VERSION
majorversion="2"
minorversion="0"
buildphase="3"
buildnumber="0368"
builddate="2006/06/29"
unique="synology_ixp420_junior"

7) Downgrade firmware using the web-admin-tool:
- Logon via web-browser as user "admin"
- Go to "firmware upgrade"

The folowing information is now showing:
Model Name: DS-101j
Current Firmware Version: 2.0.3 - 0368
Firmware Date: 2006/06/29

- Browse for the old firmware pat-file (synology_ixp420_junior_0385.pat) and click OK

8 ) Restore system configuration:
Restore old configbackupfile under "System -> backup"
select restore and browse for your old configbackup.dss file.

I guess this step is not very importent, but I did have an old backupfile (made with 3xx firmware), so I restored my settings with this backup.

That's it.
Done...!

The time for downgrade process was aprox 10 minutes.

I know what you mean.  :)  I wasn't happy doing this either. I will think twice before upgrading my NAS again.
