MC18 crashes when leaving Theater View
« on: October 09, 2012, 05:22:00 am »

As posted in the 18.0.51 thread:
When MC is set to start in Theater View and one exits Theater View, the window
simply disappears, while the process itself is still running.
MC can't be started again unless the process is killed.

Sometimes I get the dialogue that presents options for restarting after a crash,
and the first option is to start in Stand View. Even though I'v selected that option,
MC always starts in Theater View, and I have no way to see the normal MC window.
But I really need to set some options.

How can I reset that start in Theater View option from outside the program?

Looks like an issue I had a few weeks ago.

Any chance you updated to the most recent nVidia drivers? I've been having all sorts of handshake and video issues with them.

No, it's the HTPC which is using Intel HD onboard graphics.

Do you still experience that issue? Did you look at that other thread I linked?

Yeah I do still have the issue
I saw your post there and quoted you in my post in that thread.

I don't see a solution mentioned there?
I'm about to uninstall.

How did you fix it?

18.0.55 is at the top of this board.  It fixes a couple of crashes.

Follow Jim's link to update to the latest beta.

Please do note that it is beta and it may still have bugs.

Do you have MC17 and MC18 both installed on the same machine?

When you exit Theater View and it crashes, can you open Task Manager (CTRL-SHIFT-ESC), look on the tab Processes, make sure its sorted on Description (click the collumn header) and scroll down to Media Center ... see if you can find Media Center 18.exe and/or JRService.exe running. Close both processes by selecting them and clicking the End Process button. Make sure they dissapear from the list.

Start Media Center 18 again. If it doesn't automatically go to Theater View, press control-4. Exit Theater View. If you had my issue, it should not crash but return to standard view.

If it still crashes, backup your library to a safe location (File/Library/Backup Library...) and try to completely uninstall both versions, remove all settings and registry entries when asked, and reinstall only MC18. When you choose to remove all settings and registry, you will have to restore your license (unless you're still in trial of course).

Post any questions you might have and myself or someone else will try and help you the best we can.

I already made the upgrade to the 55 version.
I can't make a backup as I'm unable to get back into the program,
I'm always ending up in Theater View.

I was hoping for registry key to change the startup view...

I'm aware this is beta - I'm reporting a problem, that's what betas
are for, I guess.

InflatableMouse, are you saying, that now you can start in Theater View
and exit without a problem, or are you just starting in the normal window?

The problem arises when you have both MC17 and MC18 installed.

This can lead to MC17 processes in the background. MC18 then won't exit Theater View.

So yes, when I made sure there was no MC17 processes running in the background, MC18 would cleanly exit Theater View and go back to Standard View.

Media Center should make backups too, check your Documents folder, in JRiver\Media Center 18\Library Backups\. You should have a bunch of files there. Copy them to another folder to safeguard them. You can use them to restore your Library after a reinstall (License is not restored).

I did a complete uninstall and now it's working as it is supposed to.

For the record
I had MC17 installed on that PC.
I made an uninstall from control panel before installing MC 18
When I now uninstalled there was no trace of MC 17 except for the libraries in documents.

Anyway, thanks it's solved now.
