Poor Video playback to client
« on: September 27, 2012, 04:42:35 pm »

I want to set my upstairs PC to be a client of the downstairs library.  The problem I'm having is that trying to play back some .mkv blueray files, video is stuttering, or going slow every 5 minutes.  If I just map the drives, and create a local library, it plays fine.  Is there a fix for this?  I don't know if it is something on the client side, or the server side.

OR...

If I map a network drive to my recorded tv folder on the server, is it possible to watch a program that is in process of being recorded?  if so, how...

Is anyone else seeing this?  I reformatted the client and still have the same issues.  I would rather not reformat the server side if I can avoid it.

are you talking about under Media Network,|Video Conversion under the client options?

If so, I don't think so, but I will check once I get home.

I have now re-installed Windows on both PC's.  It still doesn't work.  I can't watch any HD video on the client without stuttering starting within 3 minutes.  Please someone help!  Again, it works fine if I play it in jriver not as a client (mapped network drive), but not as a client.  There has to be an issue somewhere.

OK...I think I know what is going on now...I have a small SSD (40 GB) for my C drive.  as i am watching stuff in client mode, the free space keeps going down...once it hits under 8GB free, then the choppiness starts.

What I don't know is how to fix it.  I have a second drive, but i am not sure what is writing to the C drive.

Again, please help!

just tried v18, and it seems that it also has issues.  reverted back to v17.

I have MY server Library look at a mapped drive to see my movies directory. My client can also see this mapped drive. The mapped drive has the same drive letter on both PCs (M:). So when I connect the client to the Servers library it can see the movies. Then I have selected under "Options - Media Network - Client Options" Play local file if one matches Library Server file is found.

So the Server does not have to use any resource to convert or stream the file.... Just like playing local..

Awesome...that worked...my 'server' sees a local drive (Drive E:)...I had mapped that drive to the client, but it was a different drive letter.  once I changed it to E: on the client, now it works great...I still think there is something wrong with the client mode though, it should have worked...but this work around is good enough for me.

and just to be clear...I checked the cpu/disk/bandwidth on the server and the client when I was having problems, and they were all under 20% peak.

P.S.  thanks for responding.

Cool.. Glad it worked. Just seems silly to make the MC engine work harder than it has to to stream something that is available locally...

I have the same problem, how did you map the drive. I am new to this.

Thanks

have you shared the drive on the server?  Google "share a network drive in win7" and set up the shared drives, then if you have any issues I am happy to help...

try this link...didn't read it all, but it seems to apply...just make sure that the dive on the server and on the client have the same letter.
