Synch library from broken Macbook
« on: November 06, 2014, 04:46:55 pm »

The Macbook I use as a server has died. I want to access the play stats by syncing the library to another Macbook. Am I right in thinking this cannot be done if the first Macbook is dead?

It's going to be hard to share the library from a dead machine.  Can you see the hard drive and recover the library that way?

How about if I uninstall MC19 from the new Macbook and reinstall using one of my licence codes? How could I do that?

Thanks. Would that override the MC on the new Mac with the one on the old Mac? Or do I have to uninstall the one on the new Mac first?

I got as far as

"In MC18 and above, this can be done from within the program, under Help > Install License, or within the startup dialog shown by the trial."

Under Help there is no Install License.

I've sort of fussed around with it but no go. I can't get it to replicate the data that was accrued when played through the old Mac. Seems odd because surely the profile would be stored somehow regardless of what computer I'm using.

Download and install MC (the version for which you own a license) first.

OK, I've done that and installed the license but the stats haven't loaded. How can I get MC on the new macbook to mirror the stats on the old macbook?

Unless you have a backup of your old library, or the stats were in the tags in the files, you're out of options.

I don't know the hardware, but if the drive on the bad machine is OK, you might be able to get files off of it.  You'll need expert advice.

Thanks. I think I last backed up a year ago in any case, so your suggestion is likely the only way.

As an aside, if I wanted to start all over afresh, would File > Library > Clear Library remove all the playing stats as well as the files and playlists?
