Is there a way to permantly get rid of "seq" column?
« on: October 31, 2012, 06:00:48 pm »

I absolutely don't need it. I have no idea what use it is. Other media players work just fine without it.

Also is there a way to get rid of the square "Display" window on the bottom of the right-side column? It annoys the bejesus out of me.

You can customize any display.  Right click on the header at the top of the list to start.

So I guess there is no way to get rid of it. Hmmm.

As for the "seq" column, is there a way to re-sequence the order so that all the numbers are in order? I sort with track #, Album, and Artist. That puts the #'s way out of order for some reason. Again, I don't understand the usefulness of this column.  Did not find this info on the wiki.

I appreciate the responses. I'm now a registered MC 17 owner.  ;D

Playlists have an Update Order button, also available as Player > Playing Now > Update Order.

ok, thank you very much.

I'd love to see an option to remove the display window in the future. Not everybody uses album art, or has any other need for the display window.

Sometimes it pops up and sometimes it doesn't.  ?

Aha!

I figured out why I didn't see "update order" in the context menu. I had all my playlists locked. You have to unlock them first.

Now I understand what the lock/unlock option is used for.

I'm having the same issue, and I don't understand how to permanently get rid of "seq" in the player.

Here's what I want accomplish:

Find album in Audio>"panes" library view, right-click the album and select "play" or "add to playing now".  I want the player to automatically play the album I've added, sorted in the order of "track" within "album" within "album artist".  I do not want to play in "seq" order, and I don't want to have to re-sort items in the player every time I add items to it.

I really like JRiver and want to purchase/register it, but if I can't get over this hurdle, I won't be able to commit and will have to find an alternative.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You can't remove the sequence column in Playing Now.  It's simply showing you the order that playback will follow.

But playback honors the order of the view that started playback.  So if you want Track # sorting (or any other sorting), simply make sure the source library view is configured to use that sorting.  Then when you double-click, it will follow that order during playback.

But playback honors the order of the view that started playback.

Well, not really.  Not in this case.  See below.

I view the album I want to play (see track# order in view):

Then, I right click the album name and select "Play", and this is the result in the player.  Note that "seq" does not follow what showed in the view, but rather alphabetical order.:

Much of the time, the player will sort in track order as shown in the "panes" view, but in cases like above, the player sorts the tracks in alphabetic order.

Here's an example of this same procedure working correctly, or as I want it to:

"pane" view, in track# order:

...and the playback result after right-clicking the album and selecting "Play".  NOTE that "seq" order matches "track#" order in this case:

What is going on here?  Why does "seq" follow alphabetical order by track name in one case, but track# order in another?

In the first set of screen shots, if you instead double-click the first track (Mighty Tight Woman) you should always get the behavior you want.

If you instead go to the panes and double-click / right-click, the order of tracks is somehow different.  I'm not sure why, and I can't reproduce it.  Would you use Customize View... > Save this view... and email it to logs at jriver dot com?  I'd like to better understand what's happening.

Thanks.

I do indeed get the desired behavior in that case.  However, I want to be able to add multiple albums to the player by simply selecting the albums I want, not the individual tracks.

Well, look at that.  I was wrong, "seq" doesn't match "track#" exactly in my second case either (see tracks 2-8).  I don't understand what "seq" is following here:

It seems to be lost in the intranets.

Maybe put the file in a zip.

The address is:
logs at jriver dot com
(obviously, replace the at and dot with symbols)

Thanks.

Here's adding some good juju to this case, hoping Matt is able to reproduce.  It's a bugger.

Thanks, I've got the file.

I still haven't been able to reproduce, but I'll keep digging.

Two ideas in the meantime:

1) Delete your sort cache folder:
[Library Folder]\Cache\File List Sort

Mine is here:
C:\Users\Main\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 18\Library\Cache\File List Sort

Does that make any difference?

Normally the cache isn't even used for small lists (depends on the machine speed), but it's worth a try.

2) Send a library backup to the logs at jriver dot com address so I can test using the same files and metadata.

Thanks for your help.  It would be great to get this fixed.

FYI: I believe it has something to do with sorting set to Default.  Once I overrode Default with my own sorting, this has never occurred again for me.

I see the problem.

The panes are not applying a sorting when doing a double-click / right-click, at least when the default sorting is being used.

If you use filenames with track # in them, normally the files are in the database is track sequence.  This was hiding the problem from me (the order of tracks _should_ be irrelevant, I'm only explaining why I didn't see the problem).

I'll get this fixed for the next build of MC18.  Once we know it's right there, we can talk about MC17.

Thanks again.

OK.  I'll check in here periodically for updates.  There's still about 2 weeks left in my trial period for MC17, and hope to see this fixed before I purchase either MC17 or 18.

There's still a corner-case here, and I'm not sure if it's worth changing.

If I double-click "Bob Dylan" in the panes, it starts with the album "Dylan" (the first alphabetically).  If I look in the list, the album "New Morning" is first (the first by date).

This is because a file list can specify a grouping, and a grouping sorts before files.  The panes have no concept of grouping and are evaluated before any list-specific stuff like grouping.

The fix will be public in MC18 next week.

Thanks for thinking of purchase.  The license you gets works with both MC17 and MC18.

Yeah, that would make no difference to me, but something possibly to consider for others.  Ideally, I would like to see albums in chronological order by artist, but it's not a big deal.

Thanks for taking care of this so quickly!  I will definitely consider buying MC18.

So are you saying that the sort from a subsequent (e.g. Album) pane is honored?

Obviously there's an inherent ambiguity with two sort orders (pane sorting and file list sorting).  Its not clear to me which should be honored, but my gut leans towards thinking folks would expect the latter.

+1

If files in a file list are shown in a certain order when I click in a pane I would expect them to play in that order if I double click the item in the pane. I also think that the concept perceived by most is that playing now is playing files, not albums or artists (compare the option to play shuffled that works on the file, not album or artist, level).

FYI, another observation about track sequence from a new MC17 user:

I found the problem of track-play following the "seq" order only when I played from my media server using MC as a DLNA player (Synology Diskstation with Logitech Media Server running).

When I play from my local library on a local drive, I find that double-clicking on the album name consistently plays tracks in expected order (track # matches seq).

You may already know that, but I wanted to be sure you did.

I'm syncing my library (importing) from a shared network drive, and have the problem I outlined above.  I am not using DLNA.
