[Bit Depth] not displayed
« on: November 11, 2012, 05:24:17 am »

Hi,
I am currently testing JRiver MC17 and I am quite impressed with it.
Most things work fine. I am streaming files from local HD and a Synology NAS. The only issue I have run into is that the [Bit Depth] parameter is not read from my files. If I try to list bit depth on the status bar at the top of MC, a blank is returned. The display I get is i.e. "44.1kHz bit 2ch". Also any Smartlist I define that includes a test for bit depth does not return any files. This happens for files streamed from HD and files streamed from NAS.
It happens on a Win7 machine and on a Win8 machine.
What might I be doing wrong?
Thanks and best Regards

Welcome to Interact.  What kind of files are they?  When you say HD, do you mean a local hard disk?

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the super fast response. Yes, with HD I mean my local harddisk in the PC.
I have tried all the different filetypes I have (flac, mp3, aac) and it occurs with all of them, also when I play a CD on the optical drive of the PC.  Bitrate and sampling rate (and all the other parameters I tried) are displayed correctly, but bit depth simply refuses. In the meantime I also tried a PC with XP on it, thinking it was a Win7 or Win8 thing, but the behaviour is exactly the same.
I'm puzzled.

Thinking a little more, I believe this was removed intentionally because it was confusing.  The bit-depth of MC's audio engine is always 64 bits.  Matt may have more to say about it.

The information must be there in Win7 and Win8. I can get the bit depth to display correctly in foobar 2000 using $info(bitspersample). Could the syntax of the command have been changed in MC17?

The token [Bit Depth] will output the bit depth as stored in the library.

You can show the column 'Bit Depth' in any view and see how it's filled.

Thanks Matt, worked like a breeze. I had not set my library up correctly and hence the parameters were not read into the library. Now Bid Depth displays correctly everywhere.
