Doof - Download Manager and Dialup
« on: April 15, 2002, 01:28:38 pm »

Doof,
How do you connect to the internet if you do not have Windows dial-up entry? Are you using AOL? Are there any dial-up options checked on your settings?

I do use a Windows dial-up entry. The message I get only happens when I'm just booting into Windows. I have DM set to start with Windows and to start minimized. If I start it up manually, I never get that message.

Doof,
The next build will not attempt dialup to the Internet if Download Manager was loaded during Windows Startup. You have to re-check the Automatic start on Windows' startup to make it work. As for the mysterious disapearance, were there any prior activities before the crash?

There's nothing I can think of. It starts with Windows (or I start it manually), the icon is in the system tray, and I may download something or a I may not. Lately the only thing I've been downloading is the latest build of MJ. There's never any error messages or anything. I just happen to move my mouse over the tray and notice that the DM icon dissapears, or I'll download something and wonder why DM didn't get it, move my mouse over it then and it vanishes.

My PC is on 24/7. I have no screensaver, but I do have Windows power management set to shut the monitor off. Sometimes it seems like when I sit down to my PC and the screen comes back on, DM is no longer loaded or I see the icon dissapear, but I couldn't say if the two are related in any way. I'll try and pay more attention to it and see if I can pinpoint anything that may cause it.

I hate to say it, but this build (252) also gave me the message about not finding the phonebook entry.

Well, actually I'm getting that message everytime I start DM up when I'm not connected to internet. If I start DM when I'm connected, I don't get that message.

And I also just figured out that DM quits the way I describe everytime I close Outlook 2002. It'll run fine, I fire up Outlook, check my email, and then close it. DM's icon is still in the system tray, but as soon as I move my mouse over it, it goes away. Every time.

There are a few things I hope you could check out for me in your registry.

Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\RemoteAccess, do you see an entry called InternetProfile?  It should have a entry named "WebRyders", the default on your Internet settings.

Also, do you see the "WebRyders" key under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\RemoteAccess\Profile?

I just checked, for XP the registry is
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Ras Autodial\Default, stored with the name DefaultInternet. It would be nice if you could comfirm this later tonight. Thanks..

I don't have that key under HKEY_CURRENT_USER but I do have it under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. The DUN connection is set up for all users on the PC, so that's probably why it's under LOCAL_MACHINE and not CURRENT_USER.

Hope that helps. Next Page

Doof,
I had tried it with a couple of XP machine here and both are fine. Could you double check the registry

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" have a entry named "Download Manager" which probably have the value "C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\Download Manager.exe /WinStartup" and

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Ras Autodial\Default\" have a entry named "DefaultInternet" with the value of your default Dial-up Entry name.

Also, check your harddrive for a duplicate MJReader.dll. DM might be using an old version of MJReader.dll. MJ installer copy that file to Windows\system / Winnt\System32 by default.

Thanks.

Once I get home. Next Page

Another thing I wanted to mention... I think Download Manager's startup option should go into HKEY_CURRENT_USER. I want it loading for one profile on my machine but not the other (two machines this way actually). I can easily change it if I want to, but either DM or MJ's install has a tendency to set it back.

Out of curiosity, what was the deal with Outlook XP causing DM to crash? That was a weird one.

I can't see why it shouldn't be in HKEY_CURRENT_USER Next Page

For the Outlook XP, there is a IE WebControl embeded on the "Outlook Today" page and probably other places within Outlook as well. DM would attached to it fine but releasing it causes it to crash. It is MS's bug. DM now would only attach to IE Browsers and not any of the controls.

So is that going to be "next build" change? Next Page

I checked the registry entries you asked about.

As it turns out, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run entry for DM was missing the /WinStartup parameter. A throwback to an earlier build, perhaps? I added it in, and problem solved. Thanks. Next Page

Actually re-checking the start-up on Windows options in DM would add that parameter into the registry. You also mentioned that when you load DM without Internet connection DM would show the same "not finding the phonebook entry" message box? Does that still happen?
