A complete idiot needs help ...
« on: December 06, 2012, 01:54:06 pm »

Please be gentle guys ... I am computer stupid.  Ok ... Those new flat touchscreen computers about the size of a wallet or a little bigger are called "tablets" right ?

I want to buy one of those that I can use my JRiver with to work just like it does on my home laptop.  I do not need any special kind of linking capabilities, or special stuff.  I guess this means I need it to have a USB input for my hard drive, and a USB output to go to my outboard DAC ...

I just want to be able to add my 1TB USB powered hard drive to it, and use it to access my music on that hard drive, and operate it using JRiver ....

Can anyone please advise ?

Thanks very much

You'd run MC on your home laptop, and then use your tablet to control MC's playback.  There are various solutions, depending upon which tablet you get:

   iThings: JRemote, WebGizmo, My River
Android: Gizmo, WebGizmo, and some remote apps I don't recall

HUH ?   I am a long haul trucker that drives with another driver. When he is driving I want to use a tablet in the truck along with my hard drive.   BUT my home laptop may be being used by any of my other family members. Which would make it impossible for me to use my home laptop remotely. I am needing a completely independent tablet that will work.

mc must be run on a windows pc. it will not work on a tablet. a tablet can only be used as a type of fancy remote control.  sounds like a cheap netbook would be an option.

if you have the money , there are new laptops around with touch screens.

there may be a mac version soon too that plays music only if you are that way inclined.

I think you're generally out of luck here then.

You can have MC assist in syncing tracks to your tablet, and you can use its native media playback options, but MC runs on Windows.

Ok ... I thought a tablet was simply a computer without a keyboard.

So you guys are saying that is incorrect, and that my only option is one of the miniature laptops ?

Thanks

You can get tablets that run Windows 7.  Some have keyboards.

   https://www.google.com/search?q=windows%20pc%20tablet

But they really weren't designed to have attached USB hard drives, which drain power quickly, and tablets typically use an OS designed for touch input, flash-ram, no keyboard, no mouse, etc.  So specific tablet/smartphone OS' are used.

OK ... I see, but mini laptods do not suffer from such issues then, correct ?    Thanks
