Wrong channel mapping in OGG - please help confirm
« on: December 08, 2012, 01:52:39 pm »

Here http://ul.to/0j4e31bp  is a multi channel flac announcing the channels for 5.1 audio
flac plays fine.
when converted to OGG, channels are messed up.
I need some users to confirm this to be a problem or else jriver won't fix it, it seems.
So please do me a favor and test/confirm the OGG problem.
Thanks for your time!

Guido

Zero downloads, no response, I know OGG is not popular, but:
I need your help!
You need to have a 5.1 speaker setup to test this one
Play the OGG from zip in Post 1.
Play the FLAC for reference if unsure.
You'll hear a voice announcing the channel that is supposed to play  (left, left, left, center, center ...)
You'll notice that the OGG version is in the wrong place from center on, FLAC is perfect.

I'd appreciate if someone could take the max 5 mins to test this and report back here.
Thanks!

indeed the flac plays fine, and the ogg channels are a mess. i also converted the flac to OGG with mc (was not clear to me what you used for conversion) and also that file got messed up. i opened the 3 files in reaper. the middle one is the flac file the other ones the ogg you sended and the one i converted and it is good to see how the channels look.

@WeeHappyPixie Just DLed at work, no problems, but I provided another Link in Post #1 if you still wanna try

@gappie Thanks a lot! And yep, the OGG was converted in MC. It is not a encoding problem though, it's a playback
problem. The strange looking OGG plays well in Foobar or XBMC.

no problem.  :)
i just played it too in foobar. would not say there is no encoding/converting problem, the last ' left' and the 'right' are coming over 4 channels there too.. but indeed the rest of the channels are ok there. in mc (starting at channel 1) the center channel comes at 2 (should be 3), the sub at 6 (4), the rear left at 4 (5), the rear right at 5 (6). and this is how reaper also sees it.. now ofcourse the question is, why does foobar play it right :).. i guess (but i really dont know what i talk about) in the files there is something saying how to map the channels and mc does not pick that up?

In a coming build:
Fixed: OGG channel mapping for 5, 6, and 8 channel files was not correct.

However, I'm not quite sure what to make of the 7.1 description here:
http://xiph.org/vorbis/doc/vorbisfile/ov_read.html

In our terminology, you have "surround" speakers with 5.1, and add "rear" speakers for 7.1.  Sometimes the "surround" speakers are called "side" speakers with 7.1.

But OGG calls the 5.1 speakers "rear".  And adds "side" speakers to 7.1.

Thanks Matt and all who helped, or tried to
Can't really help with the vorbis specs, I'm sorry.
If it's only playback that needs fixing, then make it sound the same
as a 7.1 flac...

You see GuidoW, sometimes the process really does work.  :-)
