Black screen when trying to play 3D BD at 1080 24p.
« on: December 25, 2012, 04:47:37 pm »

Not sure if this issue is caused by nvdia or MC18 but I have had no suscces in playing a 3d BD at 1080p. I configure 3d in nvida I can see the 3d trial image but it will only set the desktop to 3d 720p and when I change to 1080p the picture goes black and I have to unplug my receiver and plug in a desktop lcd to see a picture or hard reboot.

Its not the receiver or the panel as I can watch the 3d picture on foxtel. I Cant work out if its the nvidia panel or MC18.

Any ideas anyone?

I am using a i-5 3570, msi gtx 660ti 2gb and 16g ram.

I read in another post that only a few of the latest nVidia cards are compliant with the HDMI 1.4 standard for 3D. If your video card doesn't support 3D properly you won't get it to work with all formats (or maybe not at all).

From Wikipedia:
HDMI 1.4 was released on May 28, 2009, and the first HDMI 1.4 products were available in the second half of 2009.[106][137] HDMI 1.4 increases the maximum resolution to 4K × 2K, i.e. 3840 × 2160p (Quad HD) at 24 Hz/25 Hz/30 Hz or 4096 × 2160p at 24 Hz (which is a resolution used with digital theaters); an HDMI Ethernet Channel (HEC), which allows for a 100 Mbit/s Ethernet connection between the two HDMI connected devices so they can share an Internet connection;[56] and introduces an Audio Return Channel (ARC),[55] 3D Over HDMI, a new Micro HDMI Connector, expanded support for color spaces, with the addition of sYCC601, Adobe RGB and Adobe YCC601; and an Automotive Connection System.[106][138][139][140][141] HDMI 1.4 supports several stereoscopic 3D formats including field alternative (interlaced), frame packing (a full resolution top-bottom format), line alternative full, side-by-side half, side-by-side full, 2D + depth, and 2D + depth + graphics + graphics depth (WOWvx),[103][142][143] with additional top/bottom formats added in version 1.4a. HDMI 1.4 requires that 3D displays support the frame packing 3D format at either 720p50 and 1080p24 or 720p60 and 1080p24.

Thanks for the response but the MSI GTX 660Ti OC graphics card is fully compliant with hdmi 4 specs and 3d capable.

This is a recent post on 3D playback - and if the info in it is still correct, MC does not yet support 3D playback.

I was just on Nvidia site. I read the notes on driver 310.70.
It looks like the latest 310.70 driver has been updated to support or work better with Blu ray and 3D.

I currently have a gtx 9800 x2 dual gpu It is on a gygabyte x58a ud5 with intel i7-990x 3.46 ghz LGA 1366 HTPC that I am currently buidling.
Will this Nvidia card work as good as the gtx660/690 single card in the environment of Madvr/Lavfilter etc.?
I am mainly interested in BD/3D support or compatiblity.

Thanks.
Ekpen.

I tried 3d thru my htpc for the first time today. I have an nvidia card and can confirm it works fine for me with tmt5. Only issue is sometimes the audio and video stutter as the bd drive spins up/down during playback. It's not a problem I have with bd playback in MC so can only assume it has something to do with 3d and/or tmt5. Strange.

Fixed this issue. My Rotel RSP-1570 had a firmware update which fixed No 3D BD playback when deep colour is enabled thru HDMI passthrough.

All 3d's now play fine......with TMT5. Just need MC18 to get on the 3d Train. Although having said that I couldnt really care less about 3d, nothing beats a good 2d PQ.
