Q. When does gapless playback have gaps?
« on: December 26, 2012, 02:22:43 pm »

A. When resampling is taking place.

I was playing some 96kHz FLACs while resampling to 48kHz and there were small but clearly discernible gaps between the tracks - a few tens of mS, I would guesstimate. Turn off the resampling and all's well.

Is this with "Play files from memory and not disc" selected? If so, does it play correctly when unselected?

No, normal playback.

Now that everyone's back at work, may I bump http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=76772.msg519958#msg519958 for developer's comment.

Happy new year!

I can't explain why this would happen.  The resampler is going to see a continuous stream of data during playback, so there's no reason that would cause gaps.

What is your between tracks mode?

Does toggling the option to suppress silence between tracks make a difference?

What is your between tracks mode?

Switch tracks: standard gapped (5s)
Gapless for sequential album tracks enabled.

Does toggling the option to suppress silence between tracks make a difference?

Yes it does but, of course, I then lose the desirable 5s gap between non-consecutive tracks in the play list.

That's an unconventional setup, so maybe there's some combination of settings causing trouble.

Does it make a difference if you manually force prebuffering (Options > Audio > Prebuffering) to 20 seconds?

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but that doesn't sound right to me. If you set a delay, whether thats .1s or 5s, another option shouldn't negate that (ie, suppress silence).

I probably don't understand how it works, but I always asumed suppress silence was meant to suppress silence from playback (a song ending with 10s silence which is then skipped), not a 5s silence induced by the player itself (ie, the gap).

...suppress silence...

This has nothing whatsoever to do with 'do not play silence'.

Oops, sorry. My bad.

Quick to post, slow to think. Ignore me :).

Matt - have you managed to reproduce this oddity yet?

I have now done so, identically, on three systems of differing configuration.

Dare I say that a fix would be nice  :'(

A bump to enquire if any thought has been given to this issue. Thanks.

Could you provide a couple sample files to help me reproduce?  I'm matt at jriver dot com.

Thanks.

Could you provide a couple sample files to help me reproduce?

I shall try to provide an example by using loopback. Would you be happy with a low bandwidth MP3 demonstration of the issue?

But it is easily reproduced, by me at any rate, on three different installations.

Do the following:

  • Audio/Track change/Standard (gapped) 1 sec
  • Gapless for sequential tracks
  • Set DSP to resample, for example, 44.1kHz to 48kHz

Play some 44.1kHz tracks with sequential track numbering - it's important that there be a good segue between them but in this configuration, you will hear a small glitch between the tracks. The problem goes away if resampling is turned off or you select all track changes to be gapless.

Thanks for the details.  I can reproduce it now.

I'll follow-up once I understand what's happening and have it fixed.

Next build:
Fixed: With resampling enabled, the setting to play sequential album tracks gapless would not work properly if the between track mode was gapped.
